Taboo Trial

After reading the rather rough description of Taboo Trial on its steam page, I will admit, I did not have high hopes for this 3rd person action roguelike game at all! However, I had a gift card, and it had a few bucks knocked off it and what can I say, I am a sucker for badass sexy anime looking babes! I took a gamble on this, but after my first run, I was kind of shocked by how awesome I found this. Now, I have heard some people say that they have had a hell of a time getting this running properly, but I never had any technical issues.

A Mixture Of Styles

I really wish that I could tell you what the hell was going on in Taboo Trial as far as the story goes, but I have no freaking idea what the actual deal is. The game is a mixture of Norse mythology and modern technology and we play as some badass looking Valkyrie type chick that must fight and seal away the bosses. The game has a range of characters that we kind of “romance” in between the action, but the translation was very rough so actually getting invested was rather tough. Which sucks, as I love the setting and the vibe of this world.

Making Your Stand!

One of the things that I loved about Taboo Trial was the gameplay. This is at its core is a roguelike action game where a typical run from the start of the game to the very end is around the four hour mark. Like other roguelike games, you get a bit better each time you play as there are new strategies, you become more skilled and of course, you get better stuff. You also need to find this hold water stuff as each run allows you to give it to another character, you give them three and they become playable, although, the different characters just look different, I never noticed any difference in the way that they played.

You Are The Weapon!

When it comes to the weapon that you actually attack within Taboo Trial, you start off with a sword, but you do eventually get a spear or an axe, but I found the sword you get at the start to be the best weapon. There are several spell type things in the game and they tend to have an actual attack that you can unleash as well as some kind of passive benefit too. You will have to hack and slash your way through hordes of enemies and there are also eight boss fights as well during a run. It is fun, entertaining, and quite addictive stuff and I had a very good time with it!

I Can See The Dawn On The Horizon

I am not ashamed to admit that it was the visuals that drew me to Taboo Trial. This game looks great. We have these sexy anime babes that have a bit of a Norse look about them. Think of the way that the female characters are dressed in Thor, but a bit more scantily clad and you will know what I am talking about. The enemy designs are really cool as the Norse setting is complimented by these robot looking enemies, it is kind of similar to what they did with Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.

Pros:

• The futuristic/Norse setting is cool
• There are some very hot babes in this game
• I found the core action gameplay to be a lot of fun
• The game felt like it was more about skill than just getting new loot

Cons:

• I found the story nearly impossible to actually follow
• Some people have reported some major issues with getting this to run properly
