Wario Land 3 would be the last game in the series to be released for the Gameboy Color before making the jump to the Gameboy Advance and what a way for the series to go out! This is one of the best games that was released for the GBC and one of the best to star Wario! It takes what Wario Land 2 did and improves on it in so many ways.
I Am The Music Man
There is a story in the game and it is rather fun. It is its very own contained story and that is something I like. I found the story Wario Land 3 tells to have a lot of “Wario” charm to it. Wario is flying around in his plane, he crashes and ends up in some strange woods. He ends up shrunk down and inside this music box. To escape, he needs to complete four worlds in order to find five music boxes.
This Is Not Mario Land Any More!
If you are coming into this game expecting a standard side-scrolling Mario Land style game you are going to be in for quite the shock to the system. The gameplay that Wario Land 3 is offering is far deeper than the Mario Land and even the last two Wario Land games. Yes, there is platforming here, but this is a game that will also make you think and in some cases make you mad as you try to figure out what to do next.
Each level has you needing to find a key and then a treasure box to unlock. There are four in each level, but you cannot do all four at once. There is a fair bit of backtracking in this game as Wario will unlock new abilities such as swimming, being able to throw enemies and more. These abilities are what will let you go back to previous levels and get keys and treasure that you could not before. It is quite challenging and will certainly make you think as you progress through the game.
Not Quite 16-Bit, But Close!
If you ask me the previous game was one of the best looking that the original Gameboy had to offer and this one here is even better. There are some cases where you could make the argument that some of the levels look 16-bit!
The character sprites are nice and chunky and there is just a ton of personality to every aspect of the game. Each of the four “worlds” has its own feel and I like how much variety there is to the presentation of the game. My only gripe is the music. While not bad, it is not as memorable as some of the other games from the Mario universe.
Overall, Wario Land 3 is a wonderful game. It is one of the best to star Wario and one of my top five games that the Gameboy color has to offer. It offers some fun platforming, but it is so much more than that! This is one very, very challenging game and the kind of game that can really become addictive. Without a shadow of a doubt, this is a must-play!
Pros:
- The game looks fantastic
- Unlocking new abilities keeps you going
- It is one very challenging game
- It has some very tricky puzzles
- One of the best games on the system
Cons:
- It starts off very difficult
- The music is not the best

Game Reviews
Nintendo's antihero is coming back May 30 for a third adventure. After crash-landing in a strange forest, a mysterious face convinces Wario to help recover his treasure. No doubt Wario will want it for himself in the end. This sequel has a golf mini-game which is required to get past certain parts of the game, and as usual, there's plenty of puzzle solving and exploration. Leave it to the big N to make a GBC game that looks this good.
