Many gamers don't even consider mobile games real video games, but that would be a huge mistake. Considering it is the biggest current market in the entire gaming industry, it brings a lot of attention to the game developers. So, in the past years, we've seen an interesting phenomenon of mobile games being ported into consoles. Today we'll explore a game that was originally an Apple Arcade exclusive and later on expanded to consoles and Steam. Developed by Studio Drydock, Wylde Flowers combines some solid bases to deliver something new. So, let's see what this game is all about.
About the game
Step into the shoes of Tara, who has just moved to a rural island to help her grandmother on the family farm. She will tend the crops, take care of the animals, and fish, make things and even find love during the day.
By night, however, Tara trains as a witch. She will learn to create potions, control the weather and seasons, fly on a broom and even transform into a cat. It's a double life she leads, but that means spicier gameplay, of course. You'll be able to interact with a wide variety of diverse characters through fully voiced dialogue and 18 hours of voice acting, all set to music composed by a real orchestra.
There are also seven different romance characters in Fairhaven, including Doctor Amira and Butcher Kim. But even if they're not romantic characters, there are NPCs you can befriend and learn more from, such as Natalia the blacksmith or Sophia, who runs the local restaurant.
It's absolutely adorable, from the cute character designs to the relaxing music and everything in between. Wylde Flowers looks like it could join some gamers' regular rotation of relaxing games. And with Spells and Secrets on the way as well, it's a good time to be a beginning student of magic.
Soft and relaxing
This indie game takes clear inspiration from games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing and adds elements of magic that could come straight out of Hogwarts Legacy. You play as Tara, who just moved into a rural town to help her grandma out on the family farm from the city after a horrible breakup.
The rural lifestyle is a relaxing change, but there's much more than meets the eye here. Every character has an interesting backstory, there's a lot to know and understand about the town, there's magic, spells, potions, and weather control, heck you can even transform into a cat. The possibilities are endless in the world of Wylde Flowers.
Review: 6.5/10
Wylde Flowers is an impressive game, especially when you consider it was actually made directly for mobile. It is true, however, that Apple Arcade has some hidden gems in its library, but the quality of mobile games has improved a lot generally over the years.
Wylde Flowers is a comforting combination of spell casting and harvesting that looks like a solid way to spend an afternoon. Especially if you enjoy games like Stardew Valley.
Pros:
- Cute designs
- Fun gameplay
- Lots of characters
Cons:
- A little repetitive
