Equal parts card game and visual novel, I Was a Teenage Exocolonist is an intriguing adventure beyond our solar system, where the shiniest stars are the memories you make along with your friends. A unique visual novel that uses card game mechanics to explore most of the features it has to offer, chances are you’ve never seen anything quite like this game.

With an emphasis on dialogue choices and light exploration gameplay, I Was a Teenage Exocolonist might prove to be a great narrative experience for fans of interactive fiction games. However, if you were expecting something a bit more based on resource gathering and a more traditional approach to survival, you might be out of luck with this title.

Growing Up in Space

As part of the first humans growing up in an extrasolar space colony, your task will be to simply live your life in the best way you can. Your character is a teenager that discovers the wonders of the new alien world they find themselves in – not to mention the interactions with other characters that, no matter how small, always have some weight on the overall plot.

Being a teenager comes with a particular set of difficulties and opportunities. You shape your characters’ interests by choosing how they spend their free time. Will you choose to explore the wonders of the natural world? Invent new technology to benefit your colony? Or would you rather chat with your pals all day long?

Every time you achieve something of note in the story, a new memory card is unlocked. Unlike games like Griftlands, where cards are used almost solely as means for combat, in I Was a Teenage Exocolonist, cards can serve a variety of purposes. You can even recollect memories from past lives to redirect the course of the whole plot, leading you to discover one of the game’s 29 different endings.

Meet and Greet

Socializing is an integral part of life in I Was a Teenage Exocolonist. Your character will get to know a handful of different characters, and ten of them are completely dateable. Granted, these dates never go too far beyond what we’ve seen in countless visual novels or even RPG games like Persona 4, but they’re a nice touch that also ties in nicely with the rest of the game.

In this space colony, however, no one is expected to stay idle for too long. Players will have to choose from 25 different colony jobs, and this is where the cards you have collected come into play.

Every random event is resolved using your cards, which means your past experiences. Perhaps remembering that time you saw a wild creature with your friends when you were young might give you a heightened chance of survival when you encounter a pack of predators while you survey the valley.

However, that’s where I Was a Teenage Exocolonist is at its weakest. Being a card game comes with a healthy dose of RNG and luck-based mechanics. Even if you try to play by the rules and try to discover everything the game has to offer, you might feel like some of the card battles feel a bit unbalanced.
