I think we all know indie games prioritize poignant storytelling over flashy spectacle. I'm not expecting an explosive campaign mode from a game by a solo developer, and I'm more than ready for a tear-jerker trauma dump whenever I play an indie title. Still, games like Albatroz still manage to surprise me.
This deeply contemplative narrative experience puts you in control of Isla, as she backpacks through the Forbidden Lands. Oh, yeah, and there's some survival RPG gameplay thrown in between stops. You can easily forget it once you lose yourself in the vast world Albatroz has to offer.
Albatroz invites you to reflect on themes of self-discovery, loss, and the power of resilience. As Isla searches for her missing sibling, the game weaves an emotional tapestry that had me completely invested from start to finish.
Trekking Through the World
After losing her sibling, Isla and a group of friends decide to trek the Forbidden Lands looking for him. However, traversing this mysterious place is no ordinary walk in the park.
Realities converge in the Forbidden Lands, giving the landscape a unique – and undeniably mysterious – vibe. Isla will have access to multiple ways of transportation to make her path through the land (or sea, at times.) At first, I thought the game would be Expeditions with some extra emotional storytelling, but I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be more like Road 96.
The game's objective is simple: reach Albatroz Mountain, where Isla's brother disappeared, and learn that, sometimes, it's better to come face to face with reality.
Plan for the Journey
Unlike Road 96, where traveling is nearly instantaneous, the journey in Albatroz plays a huge part in the core gameplay. You'll need to allocate resources and plan ahead if you hope to make it to Albatroz Mountain. Of course, part of planning your journey also implies picking the right companions for the trek.
After picking your traveling companions and resources, Albatroz turns into a modern Oregon Trail. Resource management keeps you on your toes, even as you enjoy the breathtaking vistas along the way.
Albatroz is a game about survival, sure, but also about adventure and enjoying the little things on your way. The game's overworld invites players to explore every nook and cranny. You never know the wonders – or dangers – you'll find if you venture beyond the beaten path.
A Visual Marvel
One thing that you'll immediately notice is that Albatroz is an undisputably gorgeous game. With visuals that look straight out of an oil painting, the game does its best to deliver an impactful art design without making your PC sound like a jet engine.
To top it all off, Albatroz features a relaxing and mesmerizing soundtrack that fills you with that desire to hit the road. All the little things in the game come together in the end to deliver a narrative experience that you won't soon forget. Honestly, I think I'd love an Albatroz Mountain trip for the holidays – just without all the "missing sibling" stuff, if possible.
Albatroz achieves the perfect balance between style and substance, delivering an adventure more than worth experiencing.
