Another Crab's Treasure is possibly the most charming souls like game I have had the pleasure to play. Most games in this genre take themselves super serious and are all doom and gloom, but there is a charm and wittiness here that I have not seen in any other souls like game. The thing with this game is that it does so many things great, but there are just a few things that drive me nuts which take it from being a 9 or even a 9.5/10 game to an 8… sorry for the spoiler alert on the final score there.
A Crab Without A Home
The main character in Another Crab's Treasure is a little crab called Kril who has his home repossessed and he needs to head out into the wilds of the ocean to get his home back. The world that Kril lives in is like something from an animated world! The underwater critters use plastic as a currency and there is a bit of social commentary here in regards to pollution and capitalism. The writing is fantastic and the various characters you interact with on your quest are all interesting and make you want to learn as much about this world as you can. It is funny, but it also makes you think.
Fighting For What Is Right
I love the feel of the gameplay in Another Crab's Treasure. Kril is a great character to control as he is quick and nimble with a great dash and dodge roll, but the attacks with his fork feel like they have some real weight behind them. The combat in the game is challenging and something I had a lot of fun with. One way that this game stands above other souls like games is thanks to the platforming. I was surprised at how much platforming there was in this game and thankfully, it is fantastic. You could take the souls like combat out of this game and it would stand on its own as a great 3D platformer.
What The Shell!
One way that Another Crab's Treasure changes things up is with your shell, as you are on a quest to get your home back, you need to find other things to use as a shell on your journey. These are so much fun and give you different abilities. For example, you can get a coconut and this will allow you to spin and crash into your enemies. A soda can on the other hand lets you shoot bubbles at your enemies. You can also upgrade your fork making it stronger as you go. There is a great sense of progression in the game and it was always exciting coming across a new shell as you never knew what ability it was going to grant you.
The Good And The Bad
Another Crab's Treasure has some amazing accessibility options for you. One even lets you carry around a handgun that allows you to kill enemies in one shot! That is at the extreme end of the accessibility options, but there are many ways you can tweak things. So far, this is as close to a 10/10 game as you can get, but there are some problems here that do hurt the game. To start with, the camera in this game is very erratic and takes a while to get to grips with, I took a lot of hits because I was wrestling with the camera rather than focusing on the enemy. Also, the game stutters along in some places, and I even had it crash on me a couple of times as well. These technical issues did not ruin the game, but they did spoil it on a few occasions.
I know I ended this on a bit of a downer, but I still enjoyed my time with Another Crab's Treasure. I will say that it would make a top 20 games of the year list easily, but those technical issues, mainly that camera would stop it from making my top 10! Still, with that being said, I had a lot of fun with this and I just loved the whimsical story that it told with its quirky characters. Also, this may look cute and fun, but this is still a challenging souls like game that will chew you up and spit you out if you are not careful.
Pros:
- Kril is such an awesome character
- I love the world and the lore they have built here
- This is the best platforming I have seen in a souls like game
- The way the different shells give you different abilities is fun
Cons:
- The camera can be so frustrating to deal with
- From freezes to a stuttering frame rate, it does have a few technical issues
