Finding the next great adventure in multiplay is no simple task, Atomic Picnic by Brazilian developer BitCake Studio could be just what you need. It's a Co-op Roguelike third-person shooter published by Mad Mushroom, throwing users into this cool, anime-style post-apocalyptic wasteland. If one wants to survive, he needs to team up, level up, and just keep pushing forward.
A Wasteland Worth Exploring
Atomic Picnic drops up to four players into a completely ruined world, courtesy of some unexplained cataclysm. Where the landscape once teemed with life, now it crawls with hordes of monsters-but don't get that twisted, this place isn't some bland and colorless wasteland. BitCake Studio has totally spiced it up with a vibrant anime vibe that really pops, and the wild stuff going on just looks super cool. With all the cool weapons, they're given that awesome thing called AIR GEAR, and they can zip themselves around the terrain. All these swings and dashes around the area make the fights so much more exciting and take Atomic Picnic to the whole new level compared to regular shooters.
This mechanic of free movement brings to mind the grappling hook mechanics of Attack on Titan / A.O.T. Wings of Freedom, only in a more arcadey and fast-paced way that befits the frenetic action present in the game.
Builds, Buffs, and Battling Together
Therefore, essentially, "Atomic Picnic" is about teamwork. While every player may create their cool character build, the game gets super fun when everybody works together with their skills and upgrades. With all these enemies coming toward the player-controlled survivors, chatting it up becomes super important. Should one person handle crowd control while someone else goes all out on damage? Or perhaps it's better to keep things at a balance? These strategy calls make each game feel new and exciting.
Where Atomic Picnic really shines, though, is in its progression system. Sure, players can level up their armaments and skills each time they play, but the really cool stuff comes courtesy of those game-changing upgrades. Any choice might lead to a totally different build and playstyle, with awesome combos that flip battles in your favor. It's a system that really encourages one to try new things and come back for more, as players hunt for that perfect mix of abilities.
Review: 8.5/10
Atomic Picnic is a fun brew of chaotic teamwork, smart strategies, and awesome visuals. The way you move in-game and focus on working together really set it apart from the busy roguelike shooter scene. You absolutely can play it solo, but it really shines when you team up with friends, a perfect pick for gaming groups looking for something new to get hooked on.
Survivors Mode pits you against an endless wave of enemies, and it really is a test of skill and teamwork. You can at least see how deep the game's systems go when you really extend your build and coordination to the max in this mode.
