Sometimes we see waves of games of the same genre hit the market in a short time, and even though the genre may change, this is still a thing that repeats every other year. It seems like it's the turn of the roguelike games, as they've been hitting the market really hard in the past couple of years. This time, the new indie game development studio Broken Spear announced its first title, Beneath Oresa, a 3D card-based roguelike fighting game. Seeing a new game from a new studio is always pretty exciting, the possibilities are endless. So, what is this game all about? Well, let's talk about it!

About the game

Taking advantage of its 3D nature, Beneath Oresa combines RPG deck-building and "space" fighting: combat is influenced by the proximity between characters, with Mobius or European cartoon-inspired imagery for a modern experience. The Broken Spear team drew on some of their favorite features. from other popular card-based roguelike games, which adds complexity to the gameplay and elevates the aesthetic. The game's card upgrade system also focuses on a bifurcated path of difficult decisions that come with a detrimental cost or tactical decision.

When you are diving into the depths for this adventure you're never alone, you can choose a companion who will help you in your fight against the monsters of the deep. There are a lot of them available, each one having different abilities that will allow you to level up and improve your skills.

We also have to mention that Beneath Oresa Features a forked improved system, like a skill tree you'd find in games like Skyrim. This will help you by giving you different powers and abilities. But remember that choosing one path may make the other ones disappear. This means you'll have to think a lot about how you want to upgrade your deck and find the best upgrades that fit your playstyle correctly.

A cartoony adventure

There are a lot of things that make this game stand out, and the visual style is one of them. It's not that Beneath Oresa has the best graphics or the most advanced RTX technology implemented or anything like that. Instead what shines here is the art direction, making it look a lot like a comic, it resembles the cartoon style you'd see in games like No More Heroes or the Borderlands series. Even though the gameplay is completely different in those games.

Beneath Oresa is a solid game with a very original gameplay experience, it's not every day that we get to play a card-based roguelike game. This game might be a little too complex for newcomers, but if you're willing to give it a try there's more than enough content to enjoy. If you don't feel like investing any time into it, then you could easily just ignore it. Even though most roguelike games are action-based, it's interesting to see one that revolves around deck-building.
