Evil Nun: The Broken Mask

The first time I saw a trailer for Evil Nun: The Broken Mask I had a real sense of deja vue the whole time I was watching it. Then it all clicked for me and I knew why this was! This is actually a remaster/re-release of a game that was released for mobile devices a few years back. As I am a huge horror fan, I always meant to try it out, but to be honest with you I am not a huge fan of mobile gaming, especially for an immersive horror game. Today I thought it would be fun…. or frightful to take a closer look at what you can expect from this game.

Sister Madeline Will Be With You Now

The story of Evil Nun: The Broken Mask is pretty awesome and totally the kind of thing you could imagine a company like Blumhouse turning into a movie. You are invited to go to this summer camp where it is going to be all fun and games, hanging out and meeting new people.

Well, it was all a ruse and this is no summer camp! Instead, it is a rundown hellhole (an old school) and a demonic nun called Sister Madeline is stalking all of the people there with her giant ass hammer! Do you have the guts and skills to survive and get away with your life?

The Big Screen Experience

One of the reasons I never gave Evil Nun: The Broken Mask a try on a phone is that I just could not imagine myself playing a horror game on a small screen. Do not get me wrong, the original game which has the subtitle, Horror in the School looks great for a mobile game, but I think there has been a great deal of work done to the presentation in this PC release. Things are more detailed, there is a much better use of lighting and shadows, and even old creepy Sister Madeline looks way creepier here.

Hide Or Run!

In the game, you will need to try and keep your nerve in order to get out. Evil Nun: The Broken Mask is a horror game, but I would say the gameplay is more on the stealth/puzzle side than anything else. It is split up into chapters that will move the story along, but also move you to a new section of the place where you have been taken. You can try and find and save other children and you can see if you can solve the various puzzles that will show you the way out. The whole while, Sister Madeline is on the hunt for you and you can hide or just run for your life.

The mobile game looked like a lot of fun and from what I have seen those who got into it on an Android or iPhone have loved it. However, I am glad I waited as Evil Nun: The Broken Mask has all the makings of an awesome horror game. I love a solid single-player horror experience and it looks like that is exactly what this game is bringing to the table.

I just wish it would have actually made it out when it was supposed to, but hey if they are making it as good as it can be then I guess a little delay is not a bad thing!

Pros:

  • Sister Madeline is a fantastic antagonist
  • I liked the big bump up the visuals have been given
  • The game is way more challenging than you would think
  • The puzzles are going to test you, but not frustrate you

Cons:

  • While things are randomized, I do wonder if there will be much replay value
  • I hope that they give a release date for the full game sooner than later!

Game Reviews

I first played Evil Nun: The Broken Mask a while back, but it had been so long ago, that I had forgotten about it! I was looking for a horror game to play and it popped up and it was quite different to the version that I played the last time so the developer had clearly done quite a bit of work on it. This was a blast, I was playing this while a buddy of mine was over and we were having such a fun time thanks to the jump scares and the creepy as hell nun that would simply not leave me alone!

The Summer Camp Of Your Nightmares!

In Evil Nun: The Broken Mask we play as a kid that is about to have a summer they will never forget. A religious summer camp has been opened at the old Eagle Junior High School and we have been selected to be one of the campers there! It is sure to be an epic summer of fun, games, and all kinds of good stuff right? Well no! This was all a lie and we have been tricked to come here as this is no summer camp, this is hell and we will be lucky if we make it out of here alive.

She Comes For Us All!

The villain of Evil Nun: The Broken Mask is awesome and one of the creepiest villains I have seen in a game in quite some time. Sister Madeline is the nun in question and she has a great way to punish those that she feels deserve to be punished! She has a big ass hammer that she will bludgeon you to death with! The only way to put a stop to her and get out of there is by putting together the pieces of a broken mask that may be able to seal her away and also ensure that we get out of there alive. If you enjoy horror movies I am pretty sure that you will find the tale being woven here to be quite creepy and entertaining. It was deeper than I thought it would be too which was a nice surprise.

Run Or Die? The Choice Is Yours

I was kind of shocked at just how tense of an experience Evil Nun: The Broken Mask was. This game will have you on edge the whole time you are playing it. The game is split into chapters and you do not have to just run away from Sister Madeline, you need to solve puzzles, find items, get the pieces of the mask, and find the exit all before she manages to get you. She is pretty relentless, crawling into small spaces and doing whatever it takes to find you. She is like a more persistent and creepy Nemesis from Resident Evil 3 Nemesis! My and my friend had so much fun getting scared when she would come out of nowhere and start chasing us around the stage!

She’s Got A Smile That It Seems To Me

I am not sure Sister Madeline from Evil Nun: The Broken Mask is what Axel Rose was singing about in Sweet Child of Mine! However, she is one of the creepiest characters I have had chasing me in a game. I got a huge kick out of that evil smile of hers, it is not only creepy, but you get the impression that she truly is enjoying herself chasing you down. There is a decent amount of variety to the areas in the game too which I appreciate and the game has a creepy vibe going on that I feel it does not get the credit it deserves.

If you are into horror and love some epic jump scares in your games, Evil Nun: The Broken Mask is well worth your time, energy, and pee that goes into your pants when Sister Madeline scares you for the 100th time. This was such a blast and while it is very jump and sure to make you laugh and cry at the same time as you try to convince yourself you are not scared. It is actually a fun game to play and as a horror fanatic, I was impressed with the story that they created here to tie it all together.

Pros:

  • Sister Madaline is an awesome villain
  • The whole game has a super creepy vibe that I liked
  • The gameplay here is fun and quite challenging
  • You will know fear when she starts chasing you!

Cons:

  • I have yet to check out the Xbox version of this
  • It is not the kind of game you want to play if you are in the mood to relax!
