If you’re looking for giant robot battles, you are looking for Front Mission Evolved. Jump into the pilot seat of a giant customized battle robot and get into fights with other giant robots in a game that is about, nearly entirely, giant robot battles. That may sound a little reductive as there is certainly more to it than that, but you’ll realize the way I’m writing about it is actually a subtle but loaded nod to a game that isn’t trying to be more than it truly is. For all intents and purposes, this is a solid game that is actually worth getting despite its low budget and I think you’d enjoy if you’re a fan of the genre. Let’s get into it.

Gameplay

The gameplay of this title is pretty good, there are some good bits and some bad bits but overall, its quite enjoyable. The main concept of the game is to customize your own battle robot and fight through waves of enemies with it. There are also parts where you will have to leave your robot and fight on foot, which provides a nice bit of diversity to the gameplay. One of the best bits about this game is the robot customization. It functions well, adds a lot of diversity and allows you to take on a lot of the challenges your way. A 3D, third-person action shooter, this game takes a step away from the tactical role-playing gameplay of Front Mission. It functions like a low budget third person Titanfall, or Hawken. But, thanks to the on-foot sections, it also functions like a sort of cover shooter like Gears of War, except it doesn’t force you to hug a wall every time, and instead allows you to crouch and move while remaining free to travers the battlefield.

There is a new feature in this title known as E.D.G.E which focuses much like a bullet time, allowing you to slow down time and deal massive damage to your enemies. It is definitely the function that you will be spamming as much as possible.

The Story

The story in this game is very Japanese. That might mean something to some of you, and not so much to others, but it definitely means something. The two global superpowers that still exist are constantly at each other’s throats and it’s up to you to make your side win. There are a lot of abbreviations in this title so get ready for that.

The Visuals

The graphics in this title are absolutely fine. You can easily tell what’s going on and where to go in each scene. When building your own robot, the parts all feel sufficiently different from each other, making your robot feel really unique. The machines have much harder edges and fine details, whereas the on-foot sections display you as a soft looking human. Interestingly, that actually leans into highlighting the difference in the feel of the game in those sections.

8

A simple, straightforward game that just wants to tell a story about giant mechs battling. It’s a pretty decent game to be honest.

Pros

  • Decent Visuals
  • Good gameplay
  • Giant Mechs
  • Good Music

Cons

  • Story was borderline nonsensical half of the time.
