Hang on, did somebody say Lesbian RPG Road Trip?! Well, 'Get in the Car, Loser!' had my interest, now it's got my attention. This pixelated, narrative-heavy game taps into the JRPG mechanics to deliver what is probably the most intriguing concept of the year. Not only would you want to see what this storyline offers, but what kind of twist on gameplay, too.
Yes, you'd be correct in believing that there is a statement behind this game. The whole idea is an adventure to beat back a death cult that plagues indifference. Regardless, the concept is fresh and could be one of the more memorable indie titles as of late. So let's see how 'Get in the Car, Loser!' pans out.
Assemble the Four
As the title suggests, we're going on a road trip. This adventure assembles 4 lesbians out to crush the evil Machine Devil. Attending the journey will be characters with unique abilities, skill sets, and personalities to keep things interesting. The premise sets all the standards for a typical JRPG game. However, it's one of the more outside-the-box approaches that we tend to see with the genre.
The color palette tends to veer off the more traditional. It favors a more vice-like one, highlighting all the pinks and blues in sync with the game's narrative. The characters are more relatable than the types you'd see in a fantasy universe - and the combat system rewards players with a very different set of statistics and commentary.
Even though its stature is unique, does 'Get in the Car, Loser!' actually bring anything to the table gameplay-wise? It will, and it won't. Those who enjoy JRPGs to hone in on a player's technical prowess and problem-solving skills might find this game easy and fob it off. Whereas those who like an outlandish, compelling story full of banter in-between will be thrilled with the journey.
There's a fantastic dialogue system where the banter exchange is very entertaining. It's a fun, entertaining, and challenging linear journey right to the end. 'Get in the Car, Loser!' is a game you will remember for being unique. It definitely is not the best JRPG style game you'll ever play - but it's hard to say it's not worth it.
Hell's Belles
Whether the statement behind the game strikes a chord with you or not, it's undeniable that 'Get in the Car, Loser!' is an experience. It won't win everyone over, but it's the spectacular arrangement of dialogue and its control mechanics that provide the most entertainment out of everything. I'll admit, I'm a sucker for banter-heavy games with robust character development.
So how would you describe 'Get in the Car, Loser!' to some unknown assailant? It's tricky, but you could say it has the presence of an extravagant visual novel with the dialogue of a Bioware RPG. Dragon Age II, for instance, had strong, memorable characters. All you can really say in the end is give it a try - you never know, you really could enjoy it!
Pros:
- The strong character development that parallels with an intriguing narrative
- One of the more unique JRPG style experiences
- The dialogue system is fantastic
Cons:
- Combat sequences are all relatively similar
- The storyline won't resonate with some gamers
