Yikes, Lessons in Love is a pretty disturbing and brutal sandbox/lewd visual novel game that really did take me by surprise with how dark the story became. When it comes to games like this, they have to have a well written story and characters that are well thought out and developed, and this game nails that. I am not going to go into spoilers as some of the stuff in this game is pretty messed up. I would even say that it verges on being a bit of a psychological horror game as well!
Abusing Your Power
The main character in the game is a teacher and the teacher in Lessons in Love is pretty much out to get himself a harem of school girls that are willing to do what he wants, when he wants. It starts off “innocent” enough. However, as soon as I found out I could go to where they worked once they were out of school and basically show up wherever they were, I knew that there was something more sinister to this game.
Investing In The Individual
What I think Lessons in Love does really well is let you get to know each of the girls pretty intimately and I am not just talking about sex here. You really can pray on their insecurities or in some cases you feel like you can try and do the right thing. From dealing with things like rape and incest there is a lot of dark stuff going on here. However, it is not done just for shock value or for the sake of ticking a fetish box off the list. When something like this is brought up, it is always something to do with one of the characters backstory/personal life.
This Is No Saturday Morning Cartoon!
Visually, Lessons in Love is very, very well done. They have gone for the anime kind of look here and the girls have nice big eyes and their faces are quite expressive too. I do feel that there could have been a bit more animation, but apart from that this really is an excellent looking game. I also have to give a lot of credit to the soundtrack as well which is very fitting and not out of place at all.
Guiding The Way
When I first tried to play this game, I hit a wall and lost interest. A friend then sent me a link to a good Lessons in Love guide that he found and I tried it again and I loved it. This is a game where you can sometimes feel like you are clicking on everything, but nothing that you do moves things along. There is not a good hint system in the game so do not feel bad at all about using a guide. Using a guide also lets you fully focus on the story and the story is the best part of this game anyway.
Talking about Lessons in Love is kind of funny. I am going to give this game a very good score I can tell you that right now. I found the characters and the story, in general, to be fantastic, plus the presentation of the game really was something special. However, if I did not end up using a guide, I honestly think that I would have knocked at least 1.5 off the score! Which would have been a real shame as the writing here is great and I was very invested in what was going on. I would have missed out on all that as I would have quit and never gone back to the game had it not been for a friend suggesting a guide! So now I am doing you a solid and telling you to get a guide and have it ready as soon as you start the game!
- The story of this game is great
- There are some very interesting and well-developed characters
- The story has some really messed up elements that can play on your mind
- It has some excellent visuals
- I think the game is near impossible without a guide
- I do wish that the sex scenes had a bit more animation
