If 2020 has not been enough of a dystopian for you, Necromunda will surely fill your spirits. The almost mechanic punk aesthetic of a world underneath, Necromunda takes a player on dangerous adventures, scaling through daring terrain and dangerous foes. Growing their own gang, players are tasked with fighting for power in the underground, left with those outcast from the world above: Necromunda.
The game has stunning visuals, mimicking a style similar to that of Borderlands. The various characters a player will come across each have unique visual designs and a vast availability for customization and combinations for their outfits and looks. With a mechanic punk world, the art style is sharp, grim, dark, and dusty.
Despite the darkness, the world is still bright as ever, with detailed structures, faces, and depth to make even the shadows feel alive and an interesting and important part of the game.
In an environment of complete anarchy, far below the cities of Necromunda, lies an entirely different culture and civilization (if one could even call it that) in and of itself. Multiple gangs fight for personal wealth, power, survival, and honor of their names and houses. In a true survival of the fittest scenario, only the strongest will make it more than a few moments in the grueling, deathly tunnels of the underhive. With punk technology to help, however, a piece of junk can become a weapon, defense, or even a hideout. Every character having a strong mechanical skill allows for what seems like a rusty can to turn into a flamethrower, meaning that even the weakest can attempt to fight for themselves if they get their hands on the right materials. In a sandbox mimicked games, a player controls gangs of various races: Escher, Goliath, and Orlock. With free roam ability, the gangs can be set out on various missions through different terrain, setting traps, starting an ambush, or getting bloody knuckles in melee battles, fighting their battle to become the biggest and baddest gang of the underhives.
The game offers a range of ways to play, with online gameplay available to create a type of gang competition similar to that of Grand Theft Auto Online. One can also group up with friends for an online co-op to have a gang full of real players, fighting for fame and power with their own custom characters, making a complete life in the underhives full of familiar people (only now they are possibly an orc). When not looking to play online, a player can semi-relax with AI competition instead of worrying about real players who not only are against them, but can sabotage them and their work. The game is available on computer through Steam, but provides full controller support for an easier playing style.
Although the game offers great visuals and an incredibly interesting gameplay, the game is full of bugs and a lack of life to any AI. Crashes are repetitive and progress is easily lost after playing, even if the game is saved. This can cause ridiculous frustration to a devoted player who puts hours into the game only to realize their hard work is stripped away from them at some point they never knew about. If a player is extremely patient, however, one can power through this issue and experience what had potential to be a great game.
I give this game a 4/10. It would be a solid 9, but the bugs and crashes almost make the game unplayable.
