Outcore: Desktop Adventure

Outcore: Desktop Adventure, an indie title released in 2022, offers a truly unique experience that blurs the lines between reality and fiction. The game presents a narrative that is both intriguing and mysterious, placing players in the role of a digital detective who must unravel the story of Lumi, a lost girl who unexpectedly appears on their computer desktop. So let’s go deeper into this interactive experience and see what it’s all about!

Traversing Your Desktop

The story of Outcore starts with Lumi appearing suddenly on your desktop—a very discreetly presented mysterious force that changes how everything goes. The core mystery lies atop lost memories of Lumi, and you have to rediscover her lost memories. You do this by searching for scattered memory files inside your computer system. These files do not just include random assorted files but involve pieces of Lumi's past that are very cleverly disguised in these files.

The gameplay of Outcore is not simple puzzle-solving but rather that which puts together a developing narrative that one will learn bit by bit in each particular interaction. The minimalism of the game itself—a game that works only with elements one would otherwise find on their desktop—only adds that much more to the experience, directing the player's focus on what is happening. There are no flashy graphics or complex interfaces to draw away from the unfolding story, which results in players finding themselves really invested in who Lumi might be and why she has appeared on their computer.

Breaking the Fourth Wall

Outcore: Desktop Adventure uses an aesthetic style that-s meant to the fourth wall rather effectively. This is, of course, par for the course with this psychological horror game that, much as Doki Doki Literature Club! has done before it, pushes the boundaries of preconceived notions of what a game should be through an experience that draws heavily on the player's real-life surroundings. Enacting a dim, intense overtone that would be more sinister than Doki Doki Literature Club!, Outcore enters a mix of reality and fiction to great subtle effect.

While both games play with players’ expectations, Doki Doki Literature Club! utilizes shock value and psychologically disturbing themes, and Outcore uses a more psychological and introspective method; interaction with desktop applications and the direct involvement of the player in the resolution of Lumi's mystery form a unifying, unique connection between the game and the gamer. This is only made more potent by the fact that the game leaves one inquiring about the nature of reality even within the context of their own computer desktop.

Review: 8.5/10

As the name suggests, Outcore: Desktop Adventure is a uniquely refreshing trip of adventure gaming that brings a world of puzzling problems together with story exploration and fourth walls already in tatters. The updated setting gives a new facelift added to the similar elements of psychological thriller in the story—captivating and provoking. It does not give off the same intense vibes as Doki Doki Literature Club!, but it still manages to leave a lasting impression on players who are willing to dive deep into its mysterious world.

8.5

Also be sure to keep an eye out for the updates the developers are constantly releasing on the game to add new features and cool new parts to the game!

  • Interesting puzzle mechanics
  • Great psychological thriller moments ; not too obvious

Cons:

  • The subtlety of the moments may not be savored by a few players
  • Bracketed replayability
  • A bit to minimalistic sometimes
