Planet Centauri is an indie game that was developed by a company named Permadeath and was released in the year 2016, on the 3rd of June. It is an action role playing game which allows its players to enter into a variety of fictitious settings as the protagonist of the game. The main goal of Planet Centauri is to defend the local Chlorinian species from the evil in this game, that is, the nightwalkers. The game is available in both single player and multiplayer
The game starts off with the player naming their character, and then customizing the named character’s hair and face. The player is given choice between three different modes; standard, building and brave. Once a mode is selected, the player can name their world and begin the game. The player must explore the world and come across different monsters, which they can then master and command to fight against the nightwalkers. The player collects souls by defeating these enemies; these souls essentially act as money. The player must cultivate an entire village by either finding or crafting chests, armor, weapons and even secret dungeons. Spells are created using the tools given, food is grown and eaten in order to evolve and gain strength. The features don’t just stop there; the monsters that were mastered can also evolve thus giving more strength to the character.
Planet Centauri vs. Terraria
Fans of both Planet Centauri and Terraria have been vocal about the similar aspects of both games, debating which is better. Fans have also been noticing the similarities in the gameplay, which isn’t shocking since both of them are 2D adventure role-playing games, there are bound for some overlapping to take place.
However, taking a closer look may tell us a much different story. There are many visual disparities between the two, which includes both games having different pixel art as well as different background music. One very noticeable difference is that Terraria does not have any features that lets its protagonist build their own spells. Lastly, another noticeable difference is that, even though there are many bosses to defeat in Plant Centauri, it has been noted that the bosses of Terraria are much harder to win against. Acknowledging that, this is very subjective and cannot be proven entirely. However, this is the consensus of many Terraria players who afterwards played Planet Centauri. While, glancing at both games may give one a feeling of similarity, due to the art style, color themes and most importantly the 2D layout, playing both games shows two different perspectives.
Pros of Planet Centauri
- The music complements the gameplay very much and is not panicky, even when bosses show up.
Cons of Planet Centauri
- The game has allocated different keys to different functions or tools and while this shows effort, it is quite hard to remember specifically which key serves what function.
- These letter keys, if used in naming spells, will not work which is quite disappointing.
