Amongst a growing sea of indie games, Primal Planet shines brightly to demonstrate what solo development can achieve. From Seethingswarm, the metroidvania-styled adventure combines the excitement of dinosaur encounters and depth survival crafting, all in pixel-perfect aesthetics reeking of nostalgia but fresh on the modern palate.

From Cave to Cosmos—A Prehistoric Tale

Primal Planet thrusts players into the scaly hide of a cave dweller whose simple life is shattered by a brutal T-Rex attack. What started out as a desperate struggle to survive soon turns into an epic journey where the perils of prehistoric times are combined with the intrigue of science fiction. This story unfolds naturally through the diversity of biomes on the titular planet, full of life and danger.

But the storytelling of Primal Planet is that of this cult classic, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, in an incredibly realistic way, making all the eventual sci-fi elements all the more jarring. Proudly fight to survive and protect family in a world humans no longer dominate the food chain in, making unlikely allies along the way, and uncover a mystery surrounding an alien presence. Crafting in a Prehistoric Playground

At its core, Primal Planet is a game concerned with adaptation. A metroidvania base underpins survival and crafting mechanics, which feed seamlessly into the central game loop, both for challenge and reward. Resources are scavenged for, tools and weapons crafted, and mixtures concocted in the seeking of healing and protection.

It has a deep character-skill upgrade program, one that suits well with the survival elements, for it is possible for any player to tune their caveman's abilities to create a better fit with his chosen gameplay style: whether it be combat effectiveness, stealth, or even crafting, there is a sense of progressive development where players evolve from being easy prey into a fearsome predator.

The many biomes in Primal Planet serve as both a playground and a battleground. From dense forests to treacherous mountains, mysterious ocean depths, each area has Challenges and secrets of its own. The pixel art brings it into life, surprisingly detailed, and creates a world which seems age old yet living.

Final Verdict: 8.5/10

Primal Planet does something outstanding in terms of proving the great potential of solo game development. This game itself unites several genres into a single, interesting experience for gamers who are fans of metroidvanias and survival games, mostly related to dinosaurs.

8.5

The fact that it has local co-op, in which a second player can play as Sino the sinosauropteryx, is a stroke of genius that brings both tactical depth and emotion to the journey. Seeing your dinosaur companion evolve from agile sidekick to fearsome enforcer parallels your own development from helpless caveperson to the last hope for the planet.

Pros:

  • Engaging storyline, combining prehistoric times with science fiction,
  • Well-integrated mechanics of survival and crafting,
  • Beautifully represented pixel art environments of different kinds
  • Variety of dinosaurs and enemies with unique behaviour
  • Local co-op for added depth and replayability

Cons:

  • Steep early game difficulty curve for some players
  • Intermittent pacing issues with story delivery
  • Higher immersion somewhat reduced due to limited voice acting
