What can we say about Selene ~Apoptosis~? It's got the impression of just another suggestive visual novel that would appear totally non-sensical to the naked eye. We'd think that wouldn't be too far off, given that most of the time, visual novels don't offer a whole lot other than a bit of nudity and some crude humor. Yet again, maybe not!

Despite the stereotypical stature of Selene ~Apoptosis~, there have been some decent visual novels that have adopted a similar art style. Perhaps we shouldn't rush to conclusions too quickly. Maybe there will be a thrilling tale to be told behind the lewd scenery and suggestive characters? We won't know until we have a glimpse.

An Odd Looking Mystery Box

If you are a visual novel enthusiast, you'll already be well aware of what happens mechanically. Should you be new to the realm of the genre, it's pretty simple to explain how it works. It's a digital novel where players will move through artwork and dialogue options backed by what should be a strong storyline. In the case of Selene ~Apoptosis~, neither are particularly striking.

We obviously won't go too deep into the story, given that's what makes up the game's core. However, we can set the premise for the game. A mysterious girl named Selene washes up on your doorstep and behaves like a cat. Tales will spawn from the absurdity of this situation, and it's your job to find a balance between your wife, Hope, and your weird cat woman.

You honestly can't make this stuff up. The writer must have some bizarre fantasies to conjure such a narrative. Anyway, you'll shift through the novel completing it in approximately 2-3 hours. Naturally, Selene ~Apoptosis~ is rife with all the lewd characters and visuals the genre has come to be known for. Perhaps specific audiences will be impressed, but I can guarantee others not so much.

Selene ~Apoptosis~ is just one of those visual novels that belong on the pile. There's nothing holistically thrilling about the story nor engaging with the characters. It feels like an excuse only for the developers to live out some sort of fantasy. Maybe that's OK for some, but anyone searching for a game won't be too entertained.

Always Judge a Visual Novel By Its Cover

Selene ~Apoptosis~ fits the category of stereotypical 'waifu' visual novels. While there are some decent adult offerings out there, this one is definitely not one of them. The narrative isn't particularly gripping, the characters aren't that interesting, and the premise is cringeworthy for most people who don't dabble in this genre.

I have to say that Selene ~Apoptosis~ is the kind of game that is way better the less you know about it going on. This is classed as a lewd visual novel, but it had far more horror in it than anything else. It has a very creepy and unsettling vibe and it was the kind of game that stuck with me for a while after I had finished with it. If you are someone that is looking for quick XXX action, this is not for you. If you want something that is going to give you chills and stay with you long after you have powered down your machine, check this out!

A Man And His Wife

I am going to try and not to spoil anything with the story that Selene ~Apoptosis~ is telling. However, I do want to set the scene as I want to give you the basics of what is going down here. We have a married couple and the wife, Hope is actually really nice and a character that I came to like. The marriage that these two have is pretty damn screwed up and you will soon realize that as you play the game.

There’s A Knock At The Door!

The twist here in Selene ~Apoptosis~ is that there is a knock at the door and a strange, but cute looking cat girl. You can decide to let her in or close the door. You let her in of course and the man's life starts to unravel and he ends up on a trip into crazy town that I just cannot do justice with my words. There are a few typos here and there and grammar issues, but holy crap did some of this sends shivers down my spine and make me question things! There are different endings that you can get to, so if you have the guts, you can dive into this hell again!

Cute, But Deadly

The art style in Selene ~Apoptosis~ is something that I can say is certainly not going to be for everybody. I love the dark, Stephen King style of world that they have created here and found the horror imagery to be both disturbing and pretty damn awesome at the same time. I will say that if you are coming here for the lewd content, you may not get what you expected here so that is something to keep in mind. Still, this is a game that visually, I will not forget for a very long time that is for sure.

Turning The Page

What we have here with Selene ~Apoptosis~ is a visual novel. That means most of what you will be doing here is reading the story and I am ok with that. You get to make a few choices as things progress and I love the way that on many occasions, both choices feel like they have a sinister side to them. It makes the game be something that keeps you on edge and that in a kind of morbid and disturbed way is always something I enjoy as I am a huge fan of horror.
