Coming from Ubisoft, Steep was something of a surprise for me. I have enjoyed snowboarding games in the past such as Cool Boarders and the SSX series. However, this was offering more than just snowboarding so I was not sure how I would take to it. Well, I was pleasantly surprised as this is a game that is very easy to lose many hours into.
The Mountain Is Your Home
The open-world that is your playground in Steep is just phenomenal. You have massive snow-covered mountains to play around and explore in and the way that the game manages to have dedicated racing tracks mixed in without making them stand out too much or feel forced is just incredible. Standing on top of one of the peaks and just looking out really is a sight to behold.
Extreme To The Max Dude!
The idea of Steep is that you have a ton of different missions/objectives/races that you need to do in order to earn XP. The XP does not level you or your gear up, instead, the XP is used to unlock more areas of the world for you to do more stuff in. I liked this system as sometimes messing around with various stats and pieces of gear can get a little tiresome. On the flip side of this, I am sure some people like that kind of thing, and they will wish that the XP you earned had a more “personal” touch to it.
The Four Topps
One of the cool (that was not meant to be a horrible pun, sorry) aspect of Steep is that it gives you four winter sports to play around with. Snowboarding, skiing, wingsuit flying, and paragliding. Each one offers its own set of challenges for you to complete. I really enjoyed the snowboarding, skiing, and the wingsuit flying, but to me, the paragliding felt really slow-paced and way less fun than the other three. The problem with this was that you have to do many of the paragliding missions in order to progress overall in the game.
The controls are nice and fluid, I would say that the game falls more on the “arcadey” side of things, but I see that as a massive positive. The sense of speed you get when hauling ass down a mountain on your snowboard or when you are flying in your wingsuit is really cool. Do you know what else is really cool? Crashing! You will crash a great deal in this game, but the game makes it fun and some objectives require you to crash!
I have had a great deal of fun with Steep. It is a game that is very easy to get into and a game that is also very addictive. As I write this, an expansion was released that added in some X-Games content so that is worth checking out if you get into the game. Another thing that is worth mentioning is that this game is a ton of fun to screw around in if you have a buddy online with you.
Pros:
- Four different winter sports to play in
- The sense of speed is fantastic
- The open world is truly breathtaking
- I liked the various number of items you could use to make yourself stand out
- Plenty of challenging missions to keep you on your toes
Cons:
- The paragliding is easily the worst of the sports
- Some missions can be borderline frustrating at first
