Still Life 2

It is hard to find a good mature point-and-click experience. This game is the sequel to “Still Life” and the complete series is available on Steam. At the time of the review, it was less than a couple of dollars. For those of us that haven’t played the first game. A short movie shows during the beginning to catch the player up on the series and then releases them to explore. The game earns the mature rating in the first few minutes of play. Characters swear and get emotional and there are some pictures of corpses. These elements fit, though. You are an ex-FBI agent named Vic tracking down a murderer. The first game Still Life will give the player some much needed context in “Still Life 2”, though it isn’t required. I felt like an real investigator in “Still Life 2”. I found myself making connections between people and places. There is substantial time reading files and supplements. I ended up enjoying the investigating experiance and newer games don’t offer it like “Still Life 2.”

An imperfect package

That is not to say that all the investigating and facts that I found were realistic. Sometimes the game makes mistakes and a few things can break the immersion. The FBI database in this game is glaringly goofy. Like weird webpage articles and online searches. It was still fun, and I found it worth the time and effort. This game shows its age and feels dated. Though when I look past the cracks in the paint, it is clear the developers cared about this project. Designed for realism, sometimes the game mechanics are annoying.

Returning players

Returning players will finally get answers to questions from the first game. They might also notice the dip in graphics compared to the original. It might have been budget or some other restriction, but there is a noticeable drop in this game’s visuals. The gritty design in “Still Life 2” tries to cover it up, even if at the beginning of the game it makes little sense. When introduced to the second playable character, the horror visuals work much better.

The reporter

Without spoilers, the second playable character is a reporter. Her story is much more demented and adds some needed tension to the gameplay. The new, darker theme seemed to add something missing from Vic’s story. In a point-and-click adventure, there is some expected casualness.

Diverging from that casualness felt like it worked for Paloma, the reporter character. The player can make poor decisions and the story doesn’t have a guaranteed happy ending. Most players are going to fail more than once. When I succeeded, it was satisfying. A win will take effort and some memory skills.

7

If you can handle the dated graphics and limitations of this game, it is a good experience. I enjoyed feeling like a detective and it was satisfying. Both of the characters were engaging, and I liked the story. Pick this series up on sale if you haven’t played it yet.

  • Interesting and immersive investigations
  • Detailed story with twists
  • More than a typical Point-and-click adventure

  • Frustrating scenes with hard to find objectives
  • Dated graphics
  • Frustrating camera view
