Stones Keeper is a turn-based strategy RPG that I feel more people should be talking about. With a fantasy setting, this game looks really cool and has certainly captured my attention that is for sure. It has a rather interesting battle system where the terrain and obstacles on the battlefield add to the strategic element of it. I for one am very excited about this game and today we are taking a look at some of the main features of the game and why I feel you need to be excited about it too!

The Princess Of A Floating Castle In The Sky!

The premise of the story that Stones Keeper is telling is one that I am very intrigued by. The main character is a woman called, Princess Elizabeth. Her father, the great king has died and now things are looking pretty grim. She needs to lead the Order of the Griffin to fight back the undead hordes that are closing in as well as the other not so great stuff that is going on across the land.

Did You Say Floating Castle?

Yes, yes, I did. The “gimmick” of Stones Keeper is that The Order of the Griffin lives on a castle that is built on a floating island that can fly all over the land. The castle is really cool and you can develop the castle as you play. Getting new fortifications, finding new warriors to join your cause and the most exciting thing of all is the upgrade system which allows you to make it so your castle is ready to fight off any pirates or other creatures that want to invade. A floating castle in the sky is far more fun and unique than just moving a character around a map!

Getting Ready For Battle

I know that when you look at the various trailers for Stones Keeper, the turn-based combat system in the game looks pretty standard, but I think there is a hidden level of depth here that makes it look very fun. The way that there are obstacles on the ground that you can use to get a strategic advantage or use for cover or even destroy to make a shortcut adds an extra level of strategy to combat. The way in which you can tinker with your squad by adding in new warriors with different skill sets is pretty cool too. There is a lot to do in the game, you will not just be competing in standard battles, but raids, protecting what is yours, and even trying to tack special technology that you can use for yourself.

Opening The Pages Of A Book

One aspect of Stones Keeper that I think may split people down the middle is the visuals. The game has a kind of storybook, hand-drawn quality to the graphics and this is something I really do like. I think they could be a tad brighter if I am being critical, but the monster design and the whole flying castle thing are done very well. There is not a great deal of animation during battles, but I do feel that gives the game a kind of an old-school vibe about it which I like. There are some very impressive portraits style drawings to move the story along which do look great.

I get that a game like Stones Keeper is not going to be for everyone, but I think there is a great deal to like about this game. I am all in on the fun story about a princess in a floating castle that is trying to save the land as well as establish her own rule. The turn-based combat in the game looks like it is going to be a ton of fun and I like how it is more strategic and how it will really make you think about each move.

Pros:

  • I love the idea of the story
  • The combat system in the game appears to be a great deal of fun
  • I like the prospect of recruiting new warriors for my squad
  • The art in the game is something I do like a lot

Cons:

  • This style of game is not something everyone will enjoy
  • I do wish that the graphics were perhaps just a tad brighter
