Subway Surfers is one of the most popular games out there, with over 3 billion downloads and counting on mobile phones everywhere. You play as Jake, a graffiti artist who got caught by police while working on your latest masterpiece. In order to escape, you must run along the subway tracks for as long as you can, collecting coins and power-ups to keep going.
This would be your standard running game, but it has been modified and updated to make things more exciting. Some power ups are challenging to access for example, requiring you to snag them before jumping out of the way of an obstacle. The game also gets steadily faster as time goes on, so you’ll have to work harder to keep gathering those points.
Simple navigation
Subway Surfers is often compared to Temple Run, a game that the developers, Kiloo, were inspired by. Although there are many similarities, and some even call Subway Surfers a ripoff of it, it’s also clear that many areas of the game have been improved.
One of the biggest areas is the simple navigation for Subway Surfers. In order to move around you need to swipe left, right, up or down. Without any complicated controls, it’s much easier to try daring moves to grab that extra power up. The power ups themselves are somewhat unique, and include things like a ‘no crash’ hoverboard you can snag. The obstacles are also a step up from your average rock or bush, and include things like moving platforms and other mild challenges.
While there’s nothing game changing or overwhelmingly different from games like Temple Runner, it does have a few twists to make it more entertaining.
Unlock new characters
One of the ways the game helps keep you coming back for more is through the huge number of unlockable characters available. All the characters have different abilities and stats. Since its release over 100 characters have been added, so if you want a particular skill or ability, chances are there’s a character that has it. The unlockable content goes a long way to improving the longevity of the gameplay, and giving the game lots more long term playability compared to similar games.
Microtransactions available
Like many games, this mobile app has microtransactions to help support the game. It’s not pay-to-win however. Many of the people on the leader board play for free, and have never paid for any of the available microtransactions at all. Most of the microtransactions don’t give a major boost to your ability to win or play the game, making it a fair playing field for everyone regardless of their ability to play. Plenty of Subway Surfer players have played the game for years without spending a penny, making it both a highly playable game and an affordable one too.
Subway surfers is a fun, highly playable running game with smooth navigation and enough content to keep you playing for years to come.
