The platforming genre has seen many anthropomorphic heroes down the years, each providing their own brand of wackiness, zany humour and fluid gameplay mechanics that made playing through each stage of their respective games a breeze. However, many could argue that no other platformer manages to deliver a comprehensive and action packed experience quite like Ratchet and Clank. The duo have been gracing our screens since the early 2000’s and even as recently as 2015, the series seen a return to form. However, with Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart, the stakes are at an all time high as the pair aim to deliver a next gen experience to remember.
This game will likely play like the other games within the Ratchet and Clank series, but with more polish and refinement. If that’s the case, then expect gameplay similar to franchises like Jak and Daxter, Sly Raccoon, Yooka-Laylee, Phychonauts and Sunset Overdrive. We expect a lot from the next-gen instalment of this popular series and from what we have seen so far, it doesn’t look like it will disappoint.
The Lombax is Back Again
While we don’t know exactly what to expect from this title considering we have only been treated to some trailers and gameplay. What we have been treated to is very promising indeed. First, we need to talk about the visuals. Now this game is still an animated style title, so this limits the scope for hyper realism. However, in terms of detail and visual splendour, this title looks just as sharp as any modern day Pixar film. Then with regards to the gameplay, it seems that the title will offer new mechanics, gimmicks, traveral options and a whole range of new weapons and gadgets for players to use throughout their adventure. The footage available is somewhat comparable with Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. That game offers an elevated Crash experience and we believe that Insomniac are planning to do the same with Ratchet and clank.
As for the story, well what could be more interesting than inter-dimensional travel through time and space. We argue, not much. We aren’t sure what characters we will encounter throughout but we can assume that the new ones will be intriguing and the returning ones will offer all the fan service that returning players will be craving.
Obviously, this score is pure speculation at this point as we don’t know what this game has to offer us yet. That being said though, we can’t help but be excited for this upcoming PlayStation exclusive. The gameplay looks out of this world, the visuals are on point and this all comes with the same quintessential Ratchet and Clank feel that we have grown to love down the years.
We reckon that the only reason why this game won’t be a perfect ten is the rather one note gameplay that platformers provide. That aside though, this promises to be one of the gaming highlights for the year.
