The Crush House is an interesting simulator that dabbles in a number of other genres. Part dating simulator, part adventure game, The Crush House puts you in the shoes of a producer for a 1999 hit reality TV show, “The Crush House.”
Players take the reins on pretty much everything involved in the show. This means choosing the cast, filming and production. It’s a big job, but someone has to do it! The goal is to keep The Crush House on air for as long as possible. The longer you can keep the show going however, the more questions start to arise.
A Creepy Story
Although the game could still hold water as a simulator, the game has a story that gradually reveals itself the longer the game runs. There’s something a bit suspicious about the show. Cast members seem to be addicted to Crush Juice. On top of this, cast members who go down the “Success Slide” seem to disappear forever. Where are they going? What’s happening beyond the realm of the show? The only way to find out is to keep the show going, but you can find out a little more when the show is off-air.
At night, the player is allowed to creep around the house and investigate the mystery of The Crush House. This includes forbidden conversations with cast members, as well as exploring and searching out clues on your own.
Graphics Are Bad
While the story is engaging, the graphics are pretty low quality, even for an indie game. The characters look like lumpy clay people, animations only vaguely get things like drink cups and instruments near the mouth, and expressions are about as detailed as a dolls. This doesn’t get too much in the way of gameplay, but it’s very noticeable, especially when characters are trying to fight or kiss.
Unique Gameplay
If you can get over the near constant commentary playing up Crush House in the background, the tutorial is straightforward and interesting. For the demo, only 4 characters are available, but in the full game 12 are available.
Producers have to play commercials to completion to get paid, but that comes at a price—what scintillating story do you miss filming while the commercial is playing? Focus on capturing what the audience is after, an ever-changing desire as it happens, to keep the audience engaged and watching.
At night, you can put down the camera and let the real work begin—figuring out what’s actually going on in the Crush House.
It’s hard to compare the world’s first “Thirst Person Shooter” to another game since it is fairly unique, but if you’ve ever played games like The Sims 4, you’ll have the basic idea down. Instead of controlling the characters as an omniscient god of sorts however, you’ll be a director directing their lives in this way.
This game has the makings to be interesting, but it also has some concerns that may make it difficult for players to become engaged. If you can’t get past the graphics and the constant background chatter, the game has some interesting storyline that may make it worthwhile. Otherwise, this game may be a pass.
Pros:
- Unique Gameplay
Cons:
- Graphics aren’t the best
