If you like puzzle games that are full of adventure and challenge, then you might want to check out 2020 release Timelie. This game was developed by Unique Studio, and published alongside Milk Bottle Studio. The game itself looks loaded with intrigue, and from the first images you can see that this is a puzzle adventure with more to it than the average title released within this particular genre. What, though, makes this such an interesting game to try out?
The future and past collide
Part of what makes Timelie such an intriguing title is the use of time. In this stealth adventure, you are able to control time itself. You can look into events that are set to happen in the future, so that you can then adjust the past to change the tone and opportunity.
You might find that you have to sneak attack an enemy, as attacking them in a more open term might create an unhappy future. You take the role of a young girl and her small cat, and both of you must work your way through an outstanding adventure with an engrossing story. You need to use your wits and your intellect to overcome its various challenges, working your way through a world whereby you are being hunted by robots.
The ability to change timelines is an exciting feature, though it has to be said that Timelie is arguably not long enough to make full use of this interesting idea. Some might also find the metaphor-driven storyline to be a touch obtuse, though it is easy to get into once you start to understand what is going on. Some might compare to something like Little Nightmares, given the stealth-based nature.
Enjoyable puzzling that lacks a little depth
The thing that we love most about Timelie is that this is a game that comes with some very enjoyable puzzles. The puzzles are really satisfying and force you to get well outside of the box so that you can solve its various issues. The aim, though, is more or less always the same; get one, or both, characters to the end of the puzzle.
However, the fact that sound plays no role in the game is a shame; you can essentially stand right next to a robot, and so long as it cannot see you it cannot attack.
Once you are caught, you need to go back in time because the future is no longer suitable. It creates a fail state that is very much easy to return from, allowing you to try out various tactical ideas without having to keep loading and reloading. Overall, it’s a fun and engaging stealth platformer that perhaps lacks enough variety and depth to make you play it more than once.
