Some games you go in without expecting much, and turn out to be a surprisingly great experience, this happens a lot in the indie game world. Creepy Tale 2 is one of those games, a simple indie title, but don’t let the first impression or the first look at the game fool you. There’s much more in this little game to enjoy than you might expect. So, let’s talk about Creepy Tale 2 and see if you should play it or not.
About the game
In a world where humans live in peace and harmony with supernatural creatures, everything’s like a cute fairytale. The kingdom is all in peace, until evil and mysterious evil force corrupts the young girls, and possesses them into becoming its servants.
Lars is the protagonist of this story, and he finds himself caught in an odd situation as his father is attacked by this dark and mysterious entity. Explore the kingdom and investigate, the future of the kingdom and tithe life of your little sister Ellie is at play. Beware of the darkness lurking among the darkest places of the kingdom in this horror adventure
While in some cases the gameplay might remind us of Limbo, it is a completely different experience. In Creepy Tale 2, there are no cinematics nor voice is acting, and all the story is presented in the in-game engine.
There’s a jump button and there’s a button to interact, aside from the directionals that's pretty much all there is to the controllers. The interaction button allows you to crouch, activate mechanisms, open doors, pick up objects, and other stuff. Nearly every screen and room you explore has a different puzzle and you’ll have to use your imagination to solve them. This is, of course, a sequel to the original Creepy Tale, and it’s pretty similar to the first game. It’s like reading a different chapter of the same eerie and dark fairy tale.
It’s impossible to play Creepy Tale and not feel as if it's a cartoon or children’s book that came to life. The artistic part of this game is great, it has a pretty special charm that combines cute and creepy. This is all complemented with an excellent sound design that gives a great atmosphere to the rest of the game.
One of the biggest downsides of this game is that it’s ridiculously short. You can get your first run over in about two hours or less. And once you know what to do it’s not really hard to complete the entire game in half an hour.
Even with how short it is, it is still a nice experience, and it's a pleasant surprise. Don't let the childish look of the game fool you, many dark secrets are hiding in the kingdom. Being able to solve the puzzles and understand what lies behind the darkness could be your only way of salvation. Find a way to save your sister, and survive the madness, while also trying to get peace back to the kingdom, that is the experience you'll get in this cute yet terrifying experience.
