As someone who loves horror, Little Nightmares is a game that was right up my alley the moment I saw the first trailer. This game draws many comparisons to games such as Limbo and for good reason too. I would actually say, Limbo is probably the perfect comparison. However, this may shock people, but I would say that overall, this is a far better game and a game that has you on edge the whole time you are playing it.
Escaping The Maw
Remember when you were a child and you would be scared of the most ridiculous things? Well, Little Nightmares plays on that kind of fear. We play as a little girl who is called Six and she is trapped inside this nightmarish facility that is called The Maw. The storytelling here is great and it is not a story that is full of jump scares.
Instead of relying on cheap scares. This game constantly has you in a state of fear which is very well done. I liked how the story unfolded and it was one of those games where once I beat it, I needed to talk to someone about it right away.
From Tim Burton
Ok, so Tim Burton actually had nothing to do with this game. However, the visuals and the whole style of Little Nightmares has a very Tim Burton kind of feel to it. The Maw is a fantastic place (well it is horrible, but you know what I mean) and the game has some of the most grotesque and off-putting creatures around. There are these chefs in particular that creeped the hell out of me. The game makes great use of lighting and it is amazing at how scary a world they were able to create in 2D.
The soundtrack of the game does its job and it does it well. It fits in with the creepy visuals perfectly. Again, the soundtrack sounds like something that would have been in a Tim Burton movie and I mean that as a compliment.
Sneak, Die, Repeat
The gameplay of Little Nightmares is quite interesting. You need to sneak around, solve puzzles, do a bit of platforming, and most importantly of all, avoid the creatures that want you dead! You always know where they are and it is the fear of getting caught that keeps you on your toes. None of the game is too cryptic, but there are some parts that are trial and error as you will die first time, before you even know what is happening. This is not that bad, but sometimes the platforming can be a tad off and the checkpoints can be pretty far spread out.
Overall, the gameplay is fine and it most certainly is a scary game. I liked how it was not reliant on jump scares, it was quite clever. I would not say it is a perfect game, but it is still a good one. The jumping is the only part of the gameplay that takes a while to get to grips with.
I had a great time playing through Little Nightmares. It was such a memorable experience and if you love horror, I am 100 percent certain that you are going to love this game. It is on the short side and I am not sure it is the game you would play time and time again. However, it is a game that will stick with you for a very long time. It is one of those games that is so much fun to talk to other people about.
