Everyone's favorite arch-rival plumber finally returns in his franchise, as WarioWare: Move It! jumps into the fray to try and steal the party thunder from his red-hat-donning nemesis. It's been a couple of years since we've seen our enlarged, raging villain take a load off, and it's the first time we've ever seen a direct sequel in the franchise. Shall we get our inverted headwear on and see what's happening?
WarioWare: Move It! is part of a niche series among Nintendo fans. However, if previous feedback says anything, it's a viable alternative to the more well-known party games of the more expansive universe. But I haven't indulged as much in the franchise as I should have, so I'm excited to join up with Wario and crew to party hard.
A Very Grumpy Vacation
Let's give a brief overview of the story to highlight the wackiness of this game. In this entertaining TV commercial, a golden opportunity to embark on an unforgettable journey to the idyllic "Caresaway Island" is cleverly packaged with the delectable allure of garlic burgers. Hungry and opportunistic, Wario stumbles upon the burger joint and, in sheer culinary passion, decides to take the plunge by ordering a whopping fifty garlic burgers.
To his surprise, this gastronomic feat unexpectedly catapults him into the world of leisure and relaxation, as he wins a getaway to Caresaway Island for himself and twenty of his closest companions. And so the plethora of 200 multiplayer minigames, or 'microgames' as they're called, begin. You'll be tasked with franticly completing various tasks as absurd as they are challenging.
So, how entertaining is WarioWare: Move It! as a party game? It's hard not to get immersed when downright bizarre antics are involved. Examples include mechanical frogs fending off evil ants from eating birthday cake with candles. There's plenty of creativity involved, but it's the execution that falls short in the title, mainly where the JoyCon controller is involved.
Often, players will feel hard done by the fact the controller hasn't appropriately worked or asked you to do something so weird that it's tricky to navigate. It certainly creates some talking points among peers. However, those up for a proper challenge won't be too impressed if the technology doesn't meticulously pick up the swinging motions.
Fast, Furious, and Faltering
WarioWare: Move It! may lose some of its initial charm due to repetition, but the game bounces back with brilliantly inventive multiplayer modes that promise endless entertainment. Occasionally, the motion controls might struggle to keep pace with your antics. Still, the sheer creativity in the absurd challenges presented in WarioWare: Move It! is a spectacle.
As a party title, this game could quickly become a cherished addition to our gaming rotation. Suppose you and your crew don't mind partaking in some hilariously embarrassing activities, like using your behind to construct a snowman. In that case, you'll also have a blast with Move It! It's an offbeat gem that will keep the laughter and camaraderie flowing. However, if you're looking for a more competitive challenge, it's best to stick to something like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
