WRC 5 is an exciting development in the rallying videogame genre. While it is the fifth game officially licensed by the World Championship Rally, it is the first that makes a shift in developers from Milestone S.r.l to Kulotonn Games. The move was, on the whole, a fortunate one as WRC 5 is a fun, frenetic and graphically pleasing game.
The game offers a range of options for rally racing, in locations across the globe, with the ultimate goals being to achieve the best possible results, complete achievements, and sign new contracts which open up further opportunities.
There are four game modes to choose from: Career Mode, Quick Stage, Quick Rally and Training Mode. Quick Stage and Quick Rally are fairly self-explanatory in that they allow players to jump straight in and experience or replay a favorite stage or rally, with their preferred category and vehicle. Career Mode is the main part of the game, which starts players off as at the Junior-WRC class. As part of the Career Mode, you’re not only responsible for racing, but also repairing your car and maintaining a good relationship with the rest of your team.
Finally, the training mode allows veteran players to learn new skills and test out new tricks, and players new to the game to improve their skills in a more sanitized and less challenging environment.
Each track offers unique challenges, and players have to contend with and account for a variety of different road surfaces as well as weather conditions and day cycles. In a further effort to add realism to the experience, WRC 5 does not hold players’ hands when it comes to guidance during races. Besides directions from the co-pilot that inform you of upcoming dangers or sharp turns, progress throughout the race is kept relatively “secret” from the player, and checkpoints do not inform you of success or failure with regards to the time trial aspect of the race. The audio and visual cues are limited to what an actual driver would see during a real rally race, adding a welcome element of immersion to the game.
From a realism perspective, vehicle handling is also absolutely improved in comparison to its predecessor, WRC 4: The Official Game of the FIA World Rally Championship, with clearer cues indicating when cars are driving over difficult or slippery surfaces. Using a controller is best for an optimal experience but the driving handles like a dream even with a keyboard. The game shares in the realism with games like Gran Turismo Sport and Forza Motorsport.
Both the cars and the stages are stunning. Crisp snow, clear splash-able puddles and dry dirt roads are all lovingly rendered and a joy to drive through. Dynamic and varied weather modes add even more realism to this beautiful game. In addition, the attention to detail is noticeable as cars are decorated with different liveries for each rally, in stark comparison to DiRT Rally, where liveries remain the same on all cars throughout the Career Mode.
WRC 5 if a fantastic rally game both for long-time fans of rally racing and people completely new to the sport and/or genre. Great to play by yourself or with friends, through the local multiplayer option.
