After That Night is a lewd visual novel that a friend of mine highly recommended to me. I consider myself very well versed when it comes to lewd visual novels and I think that this one has some neat ideas. Yet, what we ultimately have here is something of a mixed bag thanks to a bit of an identity crisis that the game is having. On one hand, it is like it wants to be this gritty true crime type story, but then the MC is a total goofball who says the weirdest nerdy stuff! Even with things being mixed, I was interested enough to keep on playing to see what would happen next.
Death Becomes Him
When I first read the synopsis of what the story of After That Night was, I thought that it sounded awesome. Our main character experienced a huge tragedy when he was younger. His parents were killed in a brutal fashion! We fast forward a decade later and our main character is now a detective as he tries to piece together what happened, all the while “helping” those who are in his life now and others who may need some assistance. This is an awesome premise and it sounds like it is super serious right?
Making Quips And Saving Chicks!
The serious premise that After That Night Has is kind of shadowed by the main character's personality! You see, this guy says the craziest stuff, right from the start when he is in therapy, trying to deal with his trauma, he is fantasizing about his therapist! There is a scene where he is on his way to save this chick from potentially getting sexually assaulted and he is making all these quips along the way! It is so over the top that I found it hilarious, I am not sure if that was the intent, but he comes across as like a dumber version of Star Lord from the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Best Kind Of Private Dick!
You do not have much to worry about as far as gameplay goes in After That Night. This is a game that is not going to take much effort to get through as it is about as straightforward as you can get when it comes to a lewd visual novel. The game has been released in chapters and I like how the chapters are kind of short, as I think if this thing was longer, you could start to poke all kinds of holes in the story and the lack of character development, but as you have this kind of bite sized kind of experience, it is much more entertaining as a result.
The Beauty In Tragedy!
If there is one thing I am sure that we can all agree on with After That Night, it is that the game is awesome to look at. The MC may be a bit of a goof, but that kind of makes him more relatable.
There is a large selection of ladies that he interacts with in this game and they all have their own style, from his hot aunt to Emilia the bartender, and my favorite the gym rat, Asami. There are more ladies than this and the game never wastes too much time and we get to see them in some very awesome hot scenes, most of which at the very least have a little bit of animation.
After That Night is a very interesting game to discuss. I could imagine some people would play this and be completely put off at how much of a weirdo and nerd that the MC is with all the dumb stuff he says. Yet, that was what made me want to keep on playing this game! It is something that should be taking itself seriously, but instead, we have this MC that just makes the strangest comments that I found myself getting a real kick out of this guy and enjoying myself.
Pros:
- I thought that the MC being so weird was fun
- I liked the murder mystery plot that was set up
- It has some great looking ladies
- If you do not take this too seriously, you will have a lot of fun with this
Cons:
- While I liked the quips, I could see some finding it a bit much
- There is animation here, but a bit more would have been nice
