This new game focusing on Mesoamerican sci-fi is one of the most promising new titles we’ve seen in a while. Aztech Forgotten Gods is something that could potentially be a totally new and untouched side of gaming. Have you ever pondered what the Aztec kingdom would have been like if the Spanish hadn't conquered it? What kind of technology would it have? What kind of territory would it have? If you haven't already, you can now experience it through a video game.

It was made possible by the Lienzo studio. Aztech Forgotten Gods is a game created by Mexican programmers in Chihuahua based on an alternative interpretation of Mexican history. It's a game for next-generation consoles that shows a blend of Mexica's past and futuristic technology.

Story

The game takes place in an alternate universe in which the Aztec kingdom was never vanquished. Time has passed, and the Mexica have established an empire that has advanced stone technology to an astounding degree. The Aztecs had forgotten about their gods, the idols that dominated Mesoamerican religion. We may see gods like Quetzalcóatl (the feathered serpent), Huitzilopochtli (the god of battle), Tláloc (the deity of rain), Mictlantecuhtli (the god of the underworld), and Tonatiuh in this form (the god of the sun). If you enjoyed a game like Shadow of the Colossus and the God of War franchise, this is probably going to be right up your alley.

It all begins with Achtli, the game's protagonist, accompanying her archaeologist mother to a hidden excavation. In the myth, her name signifies "seed" and relates to Mother Earth. Inadvertently, they unearth an old power source that wakes the pantheon of Aztec gods, all of whom are hell-bent on destroying the city. Achtli must confront the forgotten gods with a strange stone item like a glove in order to prevent them from destroying her city and life as she knows it.

Cool Stone Architecture

The setting is a recreation of Tenochtitlan, considered the gem of the northern hemisphere. It's a metropolis of skyscrapers, architectural marvels, the greatest arts, and cutting-edge institutions. All of this is dependent on the advancement of stone as an element, which will lead to technological advancement and expansion. You may recall that stone was a key component in Mesoamerican building. They used a lot of tezontle, a strong and light volcanic stone, as well as basalt, andesite, and limestone. Its vibrant hues, hung items in the air, quick motions, and even its noises depict a futuristic environment.

All of these aspects can be found in the cyber-stone genre, a phrase established by the Lienzo firm to represent the Aztech Forgotten Gods' combination of stone and modern technology.

"The interesting twist we put on it is to show how these people refined stone to a level that we couldn't have even imagined, in a universe combining the past with the futurism shown in its architecture," says Guillermo Vizcano, Lienzo's writer and narrative designer in charge of public relations and marketing.
