Blazing Chrome is a game that literally blew me away when I played it. Clearly, the developers like me grew up with games like Contra and decided to make a modern game in that style. Well not only did they make this happen, but they have also made one of the best 2D shooters I have played in many years.
Like An 80s Sci-Fi Movie
Any game like this really does not need a strong story as it is all about the gameplay. I am happy to say though that Blazing Chrome does feature an interesting story and it is a cliché filled 80s style sci-fi story that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that has been decimated by evil robots!
Pixel Perfect Explosions!
The art style may not wow you like some other retro pixel style games have done the last couple of years. However, I feel that Blazing Chrome more than does what it sets out to do with its visuals. I love the pixel art here and this is a game that I well and truly could have imagined begging my parents to let me buy or rent on a Friday night at my local game store. The explosions, the different types of robots and other enemies and especially the large bosses all look fantastic. Also, while there are not a ton of levels, the five that are here each has their own style.
Gameplay Is King
For me what makes Blazing Chrome a must-play game is the gameplay. This is a run and game style game that has clearly drawn inspiration from the Contra series, but I also see a tad of Metal Slug in here too. The way your character feels is great, you have full control of them and there are always a ton of enemies on the screen for you to kill.
To keep things interesting, the gameplay is always being tweaked as you play. While most of it is run and gun. There are also fun melee attacks that you can do, there are mechs you can use and there are even vehicle sections that help keep things nice and fresh as you play. Then there are the boss battles, these are challenging, epic and a lot of fun to be a part of.
You can also get some handy upgrades that give you things like better weapons, shields, and abilities like a cool double jump. The game is awesome at easing you into new sections before trying to kill you and that is something I appreciate. While many of those older Contra games were brutally hard, I like how this one here is tough, but it also feels fair.
While the actual game is short, it makes up for it with multiple difficulty levels, unlockable characters to play as, a mirror mode and a boss rush mode too. So, there is a lot of bang for your buck with this game.
I am very impressed with what they have done with Blazing Chrome. I have played many pretenders to the Contra throne over the years, but out of all the games, this one here can stand shoulder to shoulder with Contra. It is a truly awesome shooter and a game I cannot recommend highly enough.
- Balls to the wall action!
- The melee action is as much fun as the shooting
- It is a hard, but also very fair game
- Lots of cool unlockables
- Plenty of ways to extend the game thanks to new modes and difficulty levels
- Just a few more levels would have been awesome
- I want a sequel now!!!!!
