Breakout 13

Just imagine if games like Breakout 13 had been released on the Sega CD back in the 90s! It would have completely changed the perception of FMV games! There has been a real boom in the narrative gaming experience over the last few years where the line between game and movie is becoming more and more blurred. What we have here is one of the most ambitious titles that I have seen so far and it is a game that I feel is going to be loved by those who enjoy video games where the story is the main focus.

A Troubled Teen

As Breakout 13 is a story driven game, I am going to try and keep what I have to say about the story spoiler free. Basically, our main character is a gamer, a kid with a good heart, but who is misunderstood by his parents. To try and “help” him, they send him to a behavior correction institute to try and mold him into what others think he should be. While on the outside this place looks amazing, the inside is not!

Outlast?

Inside this facility and the reason for the name, Breakout 13 is that the students, patients, or actually prisoners is a better word are abused physically and mentally. Brutal beatings, electroshock therapy, and horrible and messed up interrogations by the headmaster are daily occurrences here. The game does a great job of making the player not just feel sorry for the main character, but feel a connection to them so deep that you kind of feel like you are going through this yourself.

Making Your Choices

Breakout 13 is similar to games like As Dusk Falls, Life is Strange, and The Walking Dead. It is all about the narrative. You will have the occasional quick time event, dialogue choices, action choices, and even some investigative style gameplay to keep things fresh. It actually is far more interactive than you would think when you play and there are many ways that the story can go and even a few hidden story threads for the player to discover. There are eight (well I think there are eight) endings too so there is a lot of replay value here and some of the choices that it is going to force you to make are pretty brutal and will make you question what you are doing.

No 16-Bit Limitations Here!

For Christmas 1993, I got a Sega CD with Sonic CD, Star Wars: Rebel Assault, and Ground Zero Texas. I was so excited to play movie style video games and FMVC was touted as the future of gaming. Well, FMV games n the Sega CD were not great as the color palette was so limited and things would be rather grainy. With Breakout 13, you really do feel like you are in a movie as the picture quality is amazing. I think the fact that the acting and the sound design are movie quality too also helps get you more invested in what is going on. It is actually one of the most impressive FMV games that I have ever seen.

While it may have taken the better part of 30 years, games like Breakout 13 are finally showing that FMV games can be every bit as engaging and exciting as a “regular” video game. How can you not be impressed with this? I mentioned As Dusk Falls earlier and I feel that and Life is Strange are two great comparisons to this, only this one is FMV based. The actual story being told here is very interesting too and with so many endings and branching paths, there is a lot of reason to play through this more than once.

Pros:

  • The story here is excellent
  • The game has some fantastic acting
  • There is far more to the gameplay than you may think
  • It is one of the most impressive FMV games I have ever seen

Cons:

  • Some people just do not like FMV games
  • While there different endings and paths, you will no doubt see some scenes over and over again
