Call of Saregnar

If you’re old enough to have lived through the 90s, you probably had the chance to enjoy one of the part-based fantasy RPGs that were so prevalent at the time. The narratives spun by these games took us on sprawling adventures that games today still try to emulate or compete with. One such game seeks to cast aside the graphical advancements of the modern day and craft an experience that looks and plays like one of those classic games: Call of Saregnar.

Developed by Damjan Mozetic and published by In The Keep, Call of Saregnar is a love letter to 90’s RPGs. It uses old-school 3D graphics and a low-fantasy medieval setting to immerse players in a world full of danger and adventure. There are plenty of quests and combat to be had, so here is everything you need to know about Call of Saregnar.

Old-School Charm

Call of Saregnar’s world is brought to life with the kind of low-poly 3D graphics that haven’t been in popular use since at least the early 2000s. It might not mean much to younger players, but those of us who experienced the evolution of gaming will have that nostalgia part of our brain light up with excitement. Flat textures, baked-in lighting, and the overall fuzzy appearance of the game contribute to this feature.

But Call of Saregnar doesn’t stop at the environments. The characters you meet, interact with, and fight alongside are all in the form of photographs of real actors. This is about as old-school as it gets, and even the motion of these characters is a sequence of photographs. It’s an extremely stylish, efficient way of conveying a particular style and time in video games.

One Step Removed From Reality

Aside from the game’s appearance, there is something extra special about Call of Saregnar: it is set in a believable world. Most fantasy RPGs are filled with mythical creatures and monsters, but this game is more focused on creating a realistic world where the magic and the mundane have found a way to coexist. This is more based in the real world than something like Baldur’s Gate.

You’ll role-play through this world, meeting a huge range of characters and dealing with all kinds of mysteries. Use your brains, detective skills, and teamwork to complete these quests and uncover even more about the world around you.

Prepare and Explore

Questing in Call of Saregnar takes quite a bit of prep work. Going into something where you know you’ll be engaging in tactical turn-based combat will require you to do many things if you hope your mission to be successful. There are bowstrings to oil, blades to sharpen, and armor to repair.

You’ll also need to manage your survival, which means doing things like gathering food, making sure your boots and clothes are in good condition, and bringing something to keep you warm during cold nights.

  • In-depth survival and combat mechanics that give every choice weight
  • Turn-based combat is tight and tactical
  • Massive open world full of things to see

Cons

  • Combat can be difficult
  • Old-school style might not be for everyone
