Before I dive deep into what Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days is, I do have to be honest here. While I have played many collectible card games in my time both physically and in video games, this is a series that I am not too familiar with. As a matter of fact, my familiarity with it extends to the game being released in the East many, many years ago and die hard fans begging for it to make it to the West. Well, now it is here and I thought that the art style looked cool so I decided to give it a try.

Yuki is So Crazy!

I am sure for people that are into the anime and the series in general, Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days has a story that is pretty awesome! I will admit that while I got a kick out of the anime style, the story never grabbed me. The main character is a girl called Yuki who is a high school student and a very good one, she comes across her brother playing Vanguard and she ends up pulled into this action-packed world. Like I said, I am sure for fans of the series the stories and characters are great, but it never grabbed me.

Set Your Cards And Fight

They say that there are over 1,000 cards in Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days! That was what drew me to this game as with that many cards, the kind of deck you can build in this game is insane and can be very player specific. This is a 1 vs 1 style of game where you basically are putting your deck of cards up against another players. It is not just the “cards” but who you use them and when you use them that is key here. This is not a game that holds your hand! It is very challenging and the difficulty spike as you play the CPU can get pretty extreme so you have to get good fairly quickly.

I Wanna Be The Very Best!

Now, I just mentioned playing against the CPU and that is 100 percent where you want to start with Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days. I know that it gets tough, but I found this a good way for me to get familiar with the game, the UI, and what I had to do and also get a better understanding of the kinds of cards that I would want to use. The main draw (see what I did there?) of the game is the online mode where you can test your skills against other players. This is what excited me, but I have to say that while there is no microtransactions in the game, players who decide to buy the very expensive DLC have a clear advantage over those that do not.

Would Be Good In VR!

I have said on multiple occasions that Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days is not a franchise I am familiar with, but I still know a good looking game when I see it. I like how the game makes it seem like you are actually in this world, sitting at a table and in a serious competition. There is some flashy animation here and there and overall, I do like the anime style that the game has. With the way the game is presented, I think that they could put this in VR and it would be really cool.

Pros:

• I liked the anime style the game has
• The learning curve may be steep, but I like how much depth it has
• You can play against the CPU as well as human players and the AI is very smart
• I am sure fans of the series will love this!

Cons:

• The story did nothing to interest me at all
• The asking price for the DLC they offer is crazy!
