While I played Chain Chronicle on the PlayStation Vita, this game was also available for mobile devices as well. It is a tower defense RPG that has a really cool fantasy story running through it. It was popular enough to spawn an anime, but it is a game that I have not really heard too many people talk about so I thought I would take a closer look at it today.
Stop The Black Army!
The plot of the game is something that I did enjoy. In the land of Yggdra humans, orcs ogres and more all live together in peace and harmony. They are ruled by a good king who one day finds his lands in ruins and under attack from the Black Army which is led by the Black King. It looks as if all is lost and death and decay will rule the land.
However, that is where you come in as you lead your team of warriors to stop the Black Army and defeat the Black King. The story of Chain Chronicle is pretty good and if you like fantasy stuff as I do, you will want to see it through to its conclusion.
Two Styles Become One
The presentation that they have here is very interesting. The portraits and their backgrounds are very high-end looking pieces of art. In some ways, the character designs remind me of that awesome game Dragons Crown if you have ever played that. While they have gone for a more realistic looking approach for the portraits, the in-game portion of the graphics are very different.
These are done in a much more chibi-style which I like. The characters have big heads and they have a lot of charm. Chain Chronicle does have one downside to the presentation it is the backgrounds where the battles take place as these are very plain looking.
Keep Your Eye On The Prize
I really enjoy the gameplay on offer here. It is in two parts. You have your RPG section of the game which is where the story takes place. Here you go from town to town, talking to people, getting stuff, and so on. However, as you go from town to town you have to fight enemies. This is the tower defense style of gameplay that the game has.
You can have multiple characters in your team at a team and there are a lot of characters to choose from. Each character has their own special ability and it is up to you to know how to utilize them.
You have three lines that you can fight on and each battle has a steady flow of enemies trying to get to the end zone. If they make it there, you lose the battles. I liked how there was a bit of strategy to the battle, but not at the expense of it being fun.
I would say that the best way to describe Chain Chronicle with just one word is charming. Is this the greatest game I have ever played? No, it is not, but it is one of those games that while you are playing it captivates all of your attention and makes you want to keep on playing. It has a fun fantasy style and I found the style of tower defense gameplay that the game offers to be very enjoyable.
Pros:
- The game is very addictive
- I liked how different all of the characters were
- The tower defense stuff is a lot of fun
- The story is way more interesting than you would think
- I liked the two very different art styles that the game used
Cons:
- The music is not the best
- The backgrounds in the battles could be more detailed
