In this third entry in the Darksiders franchise, you are thrown into a post-apocalyptic world full of demons and monsters that need slaying. It once again introduces a new protagonist, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and tasks you with eliminating powerful creatures with your deadly skill. This is also the first Darksiders game to be developed by Gunfire Games, after the franchise was bought by publisher THQ Nordic. Although it's slightly different in structure and gameplay than its predecessors, Darksiders 3 offers another challenging action-filled adventure with plenty of style.
Main Features
- Interesting characters and enemies
- Modifiable weapons and gear
- Challenging gameplay with multiple difficulty levels
Story
Darksiders 3 takes place around the same time as Darksiders II, with Earth in an utter state of chaos. War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, has broken the Seventh Seal and in turn, ushered in a world-ending apocalypse. As the powers that be attempt to maintain balance between the living and dead, the Seven Deadly Sins escape captivity and roam free. Summoned by her leaders, War's brother Fury is ordered to capture the Sins. Due to her immense rage and lethal ability, Fury is a perfect fit to hunt down the grotesque and manipulative beings. In order to ensure that Fury follows the rules, she is accompanied by a Watcher, a spectral being that offers assistance along the way.
Gameplay
Like the previous two Darksiders games, Darksiders 3 is an action/adventure title with a big emphasis on combat. However, Darksiders 3 changes up the formula a bit, taking inspiration from games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Whereas the other games have taken place in a large, open-ended map, Darksiders 3 is mostly linear. Playing as Fury, you'll make your way through the ruins of Earth, battling various demons and creatures to gain experience. While there is a “hack 'n slash” option that alters the gameplay, Darksiders 3's “default” gameplay setting offers more precise and purposeful fighting.
You'll still spend plenty of time slaying meager foes, gaining new upgrades and abilities as you spend fallen souls. However, a majority of the enemies can be very challenging and overwhelm you quickly. It's important to use the dodge mechanic to avoid damage, as health can only be replenished with limited consumables. If you run out of health items, you have the option to purchase more at a vendor, but you'll be spending the same currency you use to level up Fury. You can also level up your weapons and add enhancements that boost their stats, adding another layer of strategy to combat.
Conclusion
Some die-hard fans of the original Darksiders games might be disappointed by Darksiders 3's combat system, but it's still fun to slay demons nonetheless. A plethora of upgrades to both Fury and her weapons keep combat refreshing, as well as altering level traversal.
It's fun to go back to previous areas after unlocking a new ability, accessing previously blocked areas to find secret items and gear. The story is also executed well, as are the character designs of the Seven Deadly Sins. While it's not the best Darksiders game, there's still a lot to like about Darksiders 3.
