I would have to say that Dicey Dungeons is one of the most fun and interesting games I have played in quite some time. This is brought to us by the very talented, Terry Cavanagh and it is his very best work yet. Some people are put off by this when they hear that it is a “deck-building game” however calling it that is doing it a huge disservice as it is more of an RPG if you ask me.
Welcome To The Show! Roll On Down!
The game has a ton of personality and the basics of it are that you are on a weird game show where the host Lady Luck is going to see if you can get out of her dungeon alive. The catch here is that you play as one of 6 sentient dice! The presentation is just flat out awesome and I am surprised that there is not a ton of merch for this.
The dice each have their own class so picking the right one for you is key. The different kinds of dice are The Warrior, The Thief, The Robot, The Jester, The Witch, and The Inventor. Each one has their own personality and abilities that make them all feel very different. Overall if I had to pigeon hole the game into one genre it would have to be rouge lite and that is cool with me.
The gameplay of Dicey Dungeons sees you making your way through a randomly generated dungeon and having to face what feels like a never-ending horde of enemies. The game keeps things fresh and the fact that the enemy designs are just as awesome as the dice really makes you smile as you play. My personal favorite being the vampire vacuum cleaner!
Rolling the dice is very important as is making use of the abilities the dice has. You may remember I mentioned about deck building. Well, the game does have you collecting cards, but these work more like a standard inventory thing that you would have in an RPG than cards do in a deck-building game if you ask me. Some cards can only be used once and others can be used multiple times. Having a good hand can often be the key to getting past some of the trickier enemies.
The role of the dice is very important so there is an element of luck here. For example, the number you roll can mean a move will do more damage to an enemy. It can also mean that you get more health from a healing item and so on. The game is simple in theory so that anyone can play it. At the same time, there is some excellent depth here that will really make you think.
I really cannot oversell how awesome Dicey Dungeons is. It is one of the biggest surprises of the last few years for me and a game that thanks to its rouge lite gameplay and randomly generated design it is the kind of game that is always fun when you fire it. I really cannot recommend this one highly enough. Trust me, you will not be disappointed!
