When it was released in 2019, Disco Elysium was close to the top of my game of the year list for that year. This is a truly special, remarkable, and amazing kind of video game that is just so well made that I fell in love with it after about ten minutes of playing it. It is a quirky, dark, and dry detective style story wrapped around a very interesting point and click RPG style of gameplay that is so quirky and unusual that it is actually pretty damn hard to describe exactly what it is.
It Starts With A Dead Body
The story that Disco Elysium is telling is one with so many twists, turns, and strange characters that it is hard to talk about. We get to play as a detective who is investigating a dead body that is hanging from a tree. This leads us on a truly dark and macabre type of tale that is going to make you laugh, cry and say what a whole lot. It is just so entertaining and the writing so well done that you will find it impossible not to be engrossed in what is going on here.
The Ultimate Detective
You do play as a detective in Disco Elysium and you have a few choices in regards to the type of detective you are. The choices/classes are, Bruiser, Sensitive and Intelligent. Each style of detective will give you various stats, abilities, and things to make your crime solving more unique. If you were to use the bruiser one, for example, you can be a bit rougher and push a bit harder to get the information you want. If you are sensitive on the other hand…. Your tie can help you out, yep that is real and it is awesome!
A Big Mixing Pot
I think that there is so much going on in Disco Elysium that it is hard to pigeonhole this game into a single category. I would say that it is like a point and click style adventure game mixed with an RPG and also mixed with a tabletop RPG as well! Most of what you will be doing in the game will come at the result of a roll of the dice. However, what the dice says along with your stats and what the person or thing you are dealing with has going on will affect what happens. You do have a “skill tree” and it is different parts of your brain, psyche, intellect, physique, and motorics are that are here for you to invest in and the way you deal and talk to your brain is fantastic, kind of like a more trippy, weird and dark version of the Disney movie, Inside Out!
A Twisted Tale
The presentation of this game is something that I just love. The story is very weird, it has a dark sense of humor that I got a real kick out of. I think that the dark and macabre style of visuals that they have going on in Disco Elysium really do help get the strange story that they are trying to tell across very well. It has a kind of watercolor almost hand drawn style to the visuals and it is something that I thought was very cool indeed.
While I have been singing the praises of what an awesome game this is in this review. I have to be honest and say that I have just touched the iceberg of what makes Disco Elysium such a phenomenal game. It truly is a game that is very special and I do not think I have heard someone who has played it say that they did not like it! Without a doubt, this is a game that you have to play! I love this game so much that I have it on PC, Xbox, and Switch!
- The story that the game tells really did captivate me
- I loved the strange and dark sense of humor the game had
- You get to talk to the different parts of your brain
- There are a lot of ways you can customize your detective
- The humor is awesome, but maybe a tad strange and off for some folks to get
- I did find that the Switch version stuttered a tad

RPG games have always been, and continue to be, some of the most popular games in the market. They are also some of the most varied and interesting ones, in every way from art, to gameplay, and even music and story. There's always been a divisive line between table role-playing games and role-playing video games. Nowadays many of the modern RPG titles are heavily influenced by titles created by companies such as Bethesda, Obsidian, and Bioware, but Disco Elysium is something completely different.
In many ways, it feels as if these developers were purely influenced by physical role-playing games, where you throw dice and use a lot of imagination rather than the top games of the video game industry. But how does this play out, and what' Disco Elysium all about?
About the game
It all starts with a massive hangover, one so extreme that our main character can't remember who he is, let alone why he just woke up naked in a motel room. The man has been drunk for several days, and won't even remember that he's actually a detective who arrived at Martinaise, the fictional city the game is set in, to solve a crime that happened three days earlier.
There's a lot of consequences coming from these kinds of drunken acts, but there's much more to that. This character may already be involved in a lot of problems, but there's another one that haunts him from within. As there's a constant, very important dialogue in the game, and it's all because of his multiple personality disorder.
A dark world
Disco Elysium presents us with a different RPG game, one that doesn't even have any kind of traditional combat. All of the game revolves around making decisions and having conversations. It's a noir kind of game with many dark twists, set in an RPG world.
It’s a pretty mature game in every way you look at it, and one of the incredible things is that the game can be very different depending on how you choose to play it. You don’t get to customize the character’s name or his looks, but rather his personality. This carries a lot of responsibilities, as a detective, you have to do a lot of interaction with tons of characters to get to the bottom of the crime, but this can be a very deep rabbit hole, so make sure you’re ready for this.
Disco Elysium is a revolutionary role-playing game with an incredibly original conversation system. It all revolves around excellent characters that go through a lot of development and evolution. Not to mention the dark, world-building present in every aspect of the decadent city the game takes place in. What could very well be another simple, unoriginal, and boring detective story becomes one of the darkest and most loaded plots and developments we’ve seen in any detective-based games.
It is fully charged with heavy philosophical, moral, political, and mature themes, and the whole aesthetic and story of the game follow this nicely. You'll have to learn from many different characters and investigate everything you can to solve this crime. While also being haunted by the dark past of our main character.
- Excellent plot
- Nicely written and developed characters
- Great world-building
- A fresh breathe into the genre
- It can be confusing to keep track of the exploration
- Not all the characters are fully voiced
