Become a powerful dragon in Dragon Forge. It’s up to you to create your own dragon, and then have that dragon become a factory tycoon who starts mass producing magic items so they can explore more of their island. It is a resource gathering and management game at its core and that comes through in everything you do. You get to explore a fantastic world either on foot or in the air and become the dragon you always knew you were meant to be. If that doesn’t sound like a scaly dream then I don’t know what does. Let’s dive into it.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Dragon Forge is pretty straightforward. You take control of a baby dragon, you are free to alter that dragon’s appearance with horns, body types, and color schemes and try to make it unique to you. Once you have done this, you will be introduced to the world. Things are currently filled to the brim with poison mist and you need more power to get rid of it. And therein lies the rub.
You must create a factory, which allows you to process the materials you gather, allowing you to level up and clear the mist. Then you have more space to gather more materials which allow you to clear more mist. This gameplay loop is intrinsic to everything you do in this game, and there isn’t a tremendous amount to do outside of that. There is a little combat and some combat challenges, which vary in difficulty.
I will say that exploration is quite good. You take control of the dragon with the W, A, S, and D keys and walk, fly or swim around. There is a small stamina meter but its not a huge deal like it is in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You won’t suddenly drown or fall out of the sky to your death when it runs out.
While your factories are processing material, you can either gather more, or choose to turn the game off where it will proceed to continue processing materials for you. So, it has something of an idle game aspect to it as well, like Cookie Clicker.
Visuals
The visuals of the game are pretty good. The world is vibrant and diverse, and the buildings that you can construct all look realistic and warm with the game’s delightful art style. When you create your first factory village, you will find that it looks like something out of an animated film which offers a very rewarding feeling. The world itself has many diverse biomes from volcanic regions and frozen tundra’s to haunted woods and coastal archipelagos. There is a lot to see and I truly enjoyed every minute of it.
Music
The music of this game is quite nice. It plods along in the background and adds a lot of sweet ambiences to everything that is happening. It isn’t intrusive, nor is it totally ignorable, and you can’t really ask for more than that.
A very simple but amusing game for players of all ages. If you want a game that you can periodically come back to, this is the one.
