Faeland is a charming new action RPG that aims to capture the magic of classic 8-bit adventure games while bringing the graphical quality into the modern era. Developed by independent studio BumbleBee, Faeland delivers a satisfying mix of exploration, questing, and combat within its colorful pixel art world. With hints of early adventure games in its open world design and upgrades system, does this indie title stand out on its own?
A Vibrant World Waiting to be Explored
The most striking aspect of Faeland is its visual style. While clearly inspired by 8-bit classics, the graphics have been upgraded to take advantage of modern hardware. The result is a wonderful fusion of nostalgic pixel art with vibrant colors and fluid animations. These graphics not only look great but also facilitate enjoyable exploration of the game's forests, towns, dungeons and other areas. The environments are varied, detailed, and full of hidden secrets for inquisitive players.
Faeland also impresses with its flexible character progression system. As hero Sam, players can equip different weapons that impact attack speed, strength and even animation. Useful skill scrolls containing new abilities can be acquired through exploration or as quest rewards. With craftable potions and clothing offering buffs, there are many ways to customize Sam to match your preferred playstyle.
An Epic Quest with Lots to Discover
After a goblin raid destroys Sam's home, he sets off on an epic quest that will determine the fate of the realm. The main story offers plenty of excitement on its own with lots of dangerous foes to battle using Faeland's satisfying real-time combat. Yet the game also shines when you venture off the critical path. Friendly NPCs provide back story and tips, towns allow you to stock up on supplies and take a break, and various rewarding side quests can unlock additional areas to explore. There's a sense of mystery and wonder in searching the farthest corners of the map to discover what lies hidden.
Faeland captures that pure adventurous spirit reminiscent of getting lost in Hyrule or the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time. Whether you focus on the main threats or get distracted helping villagers and uncovering secrets, the open world design always gives you something fun to do.
Review: 8.5/10
While Faeland does not radically reinvent the action RPG genre, it excels at delivering a polished 8-bit inspired adventure. The visuals, music, and responsive combat come together to create an experience reminiscent of the 2D Zelda and Metroid games long-time players know and love. Yet it also compares favorably to more recent hits like Eastward with its emotional storytelling and varied side content. Faeland is a quality indie release that pays respectful homage to the classics while giving players a new world to dive into and explore.
Faeland is an impressive debut title from BumbleBee Studios and a great option for action RPG fans looking for a new adventure. Its beautiful pixel art style pairs wonderfully with fluid combat and an open world brimming with secrets. A few minor issues hold it back from being a genre masterpiece, but at its budget price point, Faeland is easy to recommend to anyone craving some 8-bit nostalgia or who just wants to embark on an epic quest.
