Kingdom Workshop is one of the most interesting building, management, strategy style games I have come across in a while. I will admit that at first glance, I was about to just move on past this game, but there was something that made me take a closer look. I am glad that I did as the idea of running a workshop in a medieval setting is the kind of thing that I find very, very cool!
If You Build It, They Will Come!
The premise of Kingdom Workshop is kind of fun. The idea here is that we have taken a job in a faraway land and we are tasked with building a workshop that will provide all kinds of useful items. While you may think that weapons are all you will be making, you do have to make what the people need such as pots, cooking food, and so on.
There is far more here than you would think and this faraway land has some secrets of its own that will be uncovered the deeper you get into the game.
Starting Out Small
The building mechanics on offer in Kingdom Workshop are very easy to get to grips with. At the start of the game, you will only be able to build a very modestly sized workshop. You do this by dragging tiles along the floor to select the size of it. This is very easy to do and once you have the layout you can then start out making stuff. At first, you will just have the basics and be making simple items for the people.
The Wonders Of Industry
I had visions of this game having me stay in a little small medieval style workshop the whole time, but the way it lets you expand is pretty amazing. Kingdom Workshop will eventually allow you to grow your workshop into a massive factory that takes over a large portion of the forest! Sure, you may have started by making swords, but you can build up to making siege cannons and other more powerful stuff. You can also start production lines and have many different things going on at once. I love this kind of stuff as there is always something that needs your attention.
Like any game of this style, in Kingdom Workshop as you start to expand and get bigger, you need help as you cannot do it all on your own. This is where you get to hire workers to come and work for you to keep things a bit more automated. Here you will have to work hard to make sure they are happy and productive, but you also have to manage timetables to make sure that no part of your business is getting ignored.
The “Sim”ple Things In Life!
Visually, this game has a style that I like. I was going to say that it looks like one of the more modern Sims games, but I actually think what they have done here is kind of like a middle ground between The Sims games that we have today and the My Sims game that was released for the Nintendo Wii many moons ago.
It is a style that I like and I think it is pretty neat that they managed to give the workers a fair bit of personality with the way that they look too.
I am so glad that I decided to stop and take a closer look at Kingdom Workshop as this is one of the best management style games to be released this year. I just love the whole idea of running this medieval workshop and the way you can expand to have this giant operation in the middle of the woods is pretty damn cool!
