I have always loved mecha anime. There's something undeniably mesmerizing about those cool machines tearing up everything in their path – or maybe it's the 'tacticool' designs some of those robots have that keep me hooked. Well, Kriegsfront Tactics has everything people like me love about the genre, and then some!
Set in an alternate 1970s Southeast Asia, you're not just commanding cool mechs – you're leading a ragtag squad through morally grey missions that'll test both your tactical skills and your conscience.
I went into this game expecting another XCOM clone with robots, but what I found was something far more interesting. Kriegsfront Tactics blends the best parts of tactical strategy games with roguelike elements, wrapping it all up in a compelling narrative that made me care about my pilots. And trust me, when you lose one of them (and you will), it really hurts.
Metal Meets Metal
The heart of Kriegsfront Tactics lies in its mecha combat system, which feels like someone took the best parts of XCOM 2 and Battletech, then cranked up the stakes to eleven. Each mission is procedurally generated, meaning you never know exactly what you're walking into.
One moment you're carefully positioning your units for an ambush, the next you're desperately trying to extract your damaged squad while enemy reinforcements pour in from all sides.
The game nails that perfect balance between tactical depth and accessibility. Sure, you can dive deep into mech customization and weapon loadouts, but you don't need an engineering degree to figure out what works. I'd say it's more Fire Emblem than XCOM in that regard, really.
Your Squad, Your Story
Unlike Into the Breach, where your pilots are basically just names on a screen, every member of your squad in Kriegsfront Tactics feels like a real person. They come with their own backgrounds, quirks, and personal stories that unfold as you play.
It plays like your average XCOM 2 campaign, where you end up creating intricate backstories for your favorite characters. Sure, it's all roleplaying, but it injects Kriegsfront Tactics with a unique personality that's hard to come by.
The resource management adds another layer of tension to every decision. Do you repair your best mech now, or save those precious parts for later? Should you take that risky mission for better rewards, knowing you might lose a pilot you've spent hours developing? These choices matter, and they'll keep you second-guessing yourself long after you've made them.
War Sometimes Changes
The alternate history setting gives Kriegsfront Tactics a unique flavor that sets it apart from other tactical games. It's not just window dressing either – the game's narrative tackles some heavy themes about war, loyalty, and the cost of survival.
The writing strikes a nice balance between serious storytelling and knowing when to lighten the mood with some dark humor. The roguelike elements mean that each campaign feels fresh, but unlike some games (I'm talking to you, Fell Seal), the procedural generation never feels too random or unfair.
Kriegsfront Tactics is a brilliant mix of tactical combat, character-driven storytelling, and roguelike replayability that'll keep you coming back for "just one more mission" until you realize it's 4 AM.

- You'll probably end up save scumming after a while (I know I did)
