The MMO world is a vast one, but only a few names have really survived the passing of time. As you might know, MMO stands for massively multiplayer online, they are real-time online worlds where thousands and even millions of players interact and play together or by themselves to complete quests, level up, and have an amazing time. Many of these games are centered in fantasy medieval worlds, but there are plenty of good exceptions to that rule. Some of these worlds are incredibly creative, and what represents creativity better than LEGO? That’s where LEGO Universe comes into play, like the first, and only up to now, MMO LEGO game. So, let’s talk about it!
About the game
Developed by Net Devil and published by The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, 'LEGO Universe' was an MMO game, released for PC and Mac on October 26, 2010. The title took place in an alternate universe populated by LEGO Minifigures, with the premise that a team of four Minifigures (Doctor Overbuild, Duke Exeter, Hael Storm, and Baron Typhonus), set out on a great journey to find the ultimate essence of pure imagination. After finding it on the mysterious planet Crux, the expedition's greedy tycoon, Baron Typhonus, is drawn to the source of this power, merging with it and giving rise to a mysterious vortex of dark, chaotic energy. It was Doctor Overbuild who was forced to plug the hole, causing Crux's planet to explode into thousands of pieces, resulting in other worlds.
In Lego Universe, we will be able to play with the famous pieces through the Internet on our compatible computer. What we find is a game very similar to the latest installments of the Lego saga as Lego Indiana Jones or Lego Star Wars, a game where apart from being able to customize anything, we can move around the universe thanks to a spaceship. There are four different factions in the game, and you can only choose to join one. Each has three specialties with 3 ranks and different types of equipment, unique weapons, and more. This will also determine the build you’ll be able to use. Throughout the game, NPCs will give you different missions to complete as you progress the story.
Even though in the early game these missions are pretty easy and simple, as you progress they get tougher and tougher, and they can be challenging. During these missions, we can break, of course, everything we find in our path including other users who are playing, and thus collect parts, money, and accessories for our character. We also have to look for flags that are hidden on each planet and even get pets. So when we move from planet to planet the game will remind us how many missions we have done, how many gold pieces and flags we have collected, and how many pets we have made.
Getting into the MMO world
The game was advertised as being the best for the younger to get involved in the world of MMO games. And it does a great job of this, it teaches all the basics you see present in any other MMO game like World of Warcraft and it makes it in a fun and simple way. Of course, this also means that there are elements in the game that require real money to be used to purchase them, and this can be a little hard to market as aimed at kids, so they said it's a fun game for any age.
LEGO Universe is a solid MMO, even if you're not good in the genre it will be fun for people of all ages. You can create a lot of cool things and customize them however you want, however, the game is indeed a little easy. And there are too many things you have to buy using real money, this takes points from the family-friendly MMO they advertised.
