We can all agree that there are two things that are awesome: Legos and Superheroes. So, why not bring the two together? The Lego superhero game series does just that in the form of simple and quirky action games that are all charm. Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham continues this tradition well enough with little tampering to the Lego gaming formula in a story and setting that reaches a cosmic scale. And that’s just the way we like our superhero romps.
Everyone Is Here
Immediately, what stands out the most about Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is its staggering roster of characters. Yes, this isn’t just a Batman game. Pretty much every fan favourite can be unlocked and played throughout the game’s 10+ hour campaign. You’ll be able to step into the boots of familiar faces like Shazam, Superman, Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman, as well as some more obscure characters like Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. This is also one of the core strengths of the game; you’re almost always switching characters which keeps the pacing fresh and the humour high.
As it says in the title, Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham goes...beyond Gotham. Brainiac has defeated the six of the most powerful Lantern Corps warriors and is hellbent on doing in the last one, Hal Jordan. Through some Lego superhero goofiness, heroes and villains join forces to deal with Brainiac who’s become quite a force to be reckoned with. You’ll traverse across the galaxy as well as time and space in a bid to stop this galactic threat. You’ll even get to relive some classic DC moments, even a few good old Adam West Batman shenanigans.
In Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, some of the main characters, including Batman, have the ability to change suits. These suits grant them a whole set of new abilities that can be used in both combat and Puzzle-solving as well as exploration. For instance, wearing the Sonic Suit allows its wearer to break through glass barriers, revealing secrets and new shortcuts. The Demolition Suit is its own barrel of fun as it can toss around bombs that deal damage to enemies and destroy environmental objects. With plenty of secrets and hidden collectables to discover, you’ll be switching things up quite often.
The Bottom Line
While the scope of Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham takes the story to the cosmic level, compared to past titles, the game world can feel quite small. That aside, the massive roster and the suit system provide enough variety to the gameplay to make it an engaging experience.
Setting aside, the story still has the familiar Lego charm with its quirky humour and self-aware in-jokes.
- The biggest Lego superhero roster yet adds plenty of variety to both the action and the exploration.
- A fun and silly story that’s filled with superhero jokes and blasts from the past.
- Even more references to the classic Batman TV series starring Adam West. What more do you want?
- Compared to Lego Batman 2, the game world here feels small despite its galactic scale.
- Puzzle-solving hasn’t seen much improvement from past Lego-based games.
