I love the Lego games, but Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars is one that does not get much love. While this is called III, it is actually the fourth game in the Lego Star Wars series as before this we had Lego Star Wars, Lego Star Wars II, and Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga. I had a lot of fun with this game and I think that it is one that holds up very well to this day. If you enjoy the Lego games and like many others, you overlooked this, I do feel that it is worth going back and playing.
Between 2 and 3
As you have probably guessed, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars is based on the hit animated show (and the movie) of the same name. It does also feature some of the events that took place in Episode II: Attack of the Clones. If you enjoy the animated series of the Clone Wars, you are going to have a great time with this.
The story mainly takes place between the first two seasons of the show. To be fair, this is due to when the game was being made. However, if you are going back to this it might be a bit of a letdown that some of the cooler events from the later games in the series are not included in the game.
Like A Glove!
One of the things that puts some people off with the Lego games is that the gameplay never really evolved for a long time. I have to be honest and say that for the most part, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars fits into that mold. You will be hacking and slashing away at enemies, solving basic puzzles, and unlocking a ton of characters, there are actually over 100 characters which was the largest of any Lego game at the time. The gameplay is fun and it is a great game to play with kids.
If I Can Get Tactical For A Moment!
While the core gameplay may not have changed a great deal, they did add some interesting things. One of which is a basic, but fun tactics-based battle mode where you can control vast numbers of troops at the same time. They also added in some cool new abilities such as being able to throw a Lightsaber. Also, space battles are much improved over what was on offer in The Complete Saga.
Charming, You Are
A huge part of the appeal of Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars and the Lego games, in general, is the charm that they have. This at the time was the best-looking of all the Lego games. It had much better lighting, they were able to display more characters on screen at once and the facial animations really help get the story across.
The soundtrack as you would expect from any Star Wars game is great. This game was released at a time before voice acting became the norm in Lego games, but I do not mind, if anything it does help add to the charm of the game.
I think that it is a bit of a shame that Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars gets so overlooked. It gets looked past in favor of games such as The Complete Saga and The Force Awakens which is a real shame as I for one would say this is actually better than The Complete Saga. It is a fun and very well-made Lego game and one that I highly recommend you check out, especially if you have kids that like to play games with you.
