Life Not Supported

You'll probably have a good guess at what the theme is surrounding Life Not Supported. That's right; it's a sci-fi game set in space. Players find themselves in a pickle after their orbiting spaceship gets destroyed in an unfortunate accident. So there we have the premise already; it's a survival game set in the deep darkness of outer space, where you'll have to use your limited resources to stay alive.

Life Not Supported doesn't have a confirmed release date yet, but it has been in early access for a while. We've had the pleasure of giving this space-survival game a whirl. We can share some opinions about whether the title can compete with the legion of similar games on the market. So let's strap on our space suits and start surviving.

Home Away From Home

So what happened here that your ship is destroyed, and you're the lone survivor? That question plays an integral role in Life Not Supported, where players are to survive long enough to piece together the mystery of the disaster. But how will you live when you're floating in orbit endlessly around a new potential home planet? You will have to use everything at your disposal floating around you.

There's an aura of humor around Life Not Supported, where players must use spaceship debris to build a home to survive. You can't help but chuckle at the idea of a new house floating around in space, made from the rubble of your formerly accommodating vessel. However, the survival mechanics of crafting and building turn out to be pretty fun, no matter how farfetched the concept.

You'll scour the debris of orbit, locating platforms and walls to build your makeshift home, discovering little pieces of evidence that tailor the ship's mysteries together. The realities of space survival come into play, where you'll have to keep tabs on your oxygen, health, hunger, and thirst. Yes, even floating spacemen need to eat, so doing your domestic chores is essential, even in panic mode!

So is Life Not Supported enjoyable in its current state? The sheer ridiculousness of gameplay makes the title tremendously entertaining. Effectively, players could build a mansion in space, leading you to wonder why you'd ever want to leave when you have prime real estate in orbit. The survival challenge keeps you on your toes and does everything a genre title should do.

Deep Space Life

Whether intended or not, it's refreshing that a survival title doesn't have such a serious edge to the premise. Popular games like The Forest are excellent at what they do. Still, the extreme intensity behind surviving sometimes becomes too much to bear. Life Not Supported, while still keeping you on the edge of your seat, feels more welcoming, delivering an enjoyable experience.

Round-Up - Pros & Cons

8

The release date shouldn't be too far off, with developers promising a Q2 2023 release, so we'll see the game's final version soon. But even if it releases in its current form, there wouldn't be too many people complaining. It's already solid survival gameplay with a highly entertaining concept.

Pros:

  • A well-designed survival experience
  • The farfetched concept makes the game entertaining
  • Intuitive control scheme making gameplay fun

Cons:

  • The crafting becomes a bit overzealous at times
  • Still has yet to deliver some development promises (such as varied biomes)
