Survival crafting games are popular, and Little Martian is the newest game available. This unique project was designed with the help of the developer’s children, making this a game that stands out from others in more ways than one.
The game has a pixelated look reminiscent of old school 80s RPGs. At the beginning of the game, you find yourself crashed on an alien planet, thanks to your very poor decision to buy cheap spaceship parts. Your goal is to survive on the planet you crashed on long enough to repair your spaceship and fly back home.
Entertaining survival crafting game
The whole game in a nutshell is to run around the world picking up items to survive. You have hunger stats to look after, but also oxygen stats that need to be attended to. While monitoring these stats, you need to build tools starting with an axe, until you have refined your tools enough to build the parts you need to go home.
The majority of the game is running around looking for things to build with, while not dying from hunger or lack of oxygen. If you’ve ever played Terraria, you get a very similar look and feel, just with a different plot.
Some minor story line issues
The game itself seems to be well made, with few glitches or other problems as you travel around making things. There are a few plot point issues that may raise some questions with those trying to immerse themselves in the game.
In a world where you need to monitor oxygen, for example, how is it possible to start a fire? Why is there no or very little oxygen in the first place, if there are so many plants available? The developers mentioned that the world has oxygen but not enough for human life, which may help add a little understanding to the storyline.
Really well put together
Despite being a new game, it feels really good to play. There’s some pressure upfront to get the wires and other things you need for an oxygenator, while at the same time not neglecting your hunger stats, and by the time you’ve gotten these things under control you are hooked.
Despite the simple graphics and lack of mobs, this game manages to have a fun and fresh feel to it. Scrambling to figure out how to get oxygen when you don’t even have an axe provides a lot of game play, and there’s plenty of little details in the world as you explore.
This is overall a fun little game. While it lacks the complexity of bigger games, there’s actually a surprising amount of gameplay available. The game will keep you occupied for a few hours of exploring, gathering, and crafting. While it may not be as advanced as other games out there, it has a certain amount of charm to it. It’s worth picking up for a long weekend if you enjoy crafting survival games.
