The video game market is bigger than most people imagine. We aren't just talking about mainstream games versus indie titles, we are all talking about where those games come from. North American and Japanese developers have always led the industry, and the European market doesn't fall behind either. But an entire universe of game developers that is often overlooked is the Latin American developers. Mago is a game developed by Dream Potion Games, a Peruvian game developer studio.

We don’t see many games come out of Peru, so it’s always exciting to see what these new developers can come up with. So, what’s Mago all about? Is it any good? Well, let’s talk about it.

About the game

Mago is a 2D platformer game that has the player controlling a wizard –Mago means wizard in Spanish, of course– and we get to explore around the kingdom wh9i;e going on an adventure. But it’s not just fun and cool spells, as Mago has to rescue his beloved after she is kidnapped by the evil Gourmet?

The game utilizes retro visuals akin to those you'd see in a SNES game, and it's a very colorful game overall. The music is also quite catchy, and the sound effects are well done. The story is pretty simple but it's enough to get a nice adventure started. After all, it's pretty much the same plot as every other Super Mario Bros. game, and it has worked for that franchise for decades now.

The gameplay is pretty straightforward: run, jump, and use your magic to defeat enemies. There are some puzzles here and there, but they're nothing too complicated. It's a bit hard at first, but once you get used to the controls, it becomes easier.

Is going this back a good idea?

We are used to seeing games go for a more retro style, especially indie games. There are many good reasons to do this, beyond the nostalgia element it adds to the game experience of course. For one thing, it makes the game look better, and it gives the player a sense of familiarity. And Mago indeed looks great, even if it does have some issues with its graphics.

But the problem is that it doesn't really feel like a game made in 2022. Yes, it uses retro visuals, but it feels like it was made in the early 90s, which by itself brings some issues. Imagine a GBA game, even though it looks good, it can have technical issues that are otherwise easily avoidable.

Review: 7/10

Overall, Mago is a nice game, where it especially shines in character design and creativity. If you want to play something that truly does feel like an old game but new, this could very well be the way to go.

It's a shame that the game isn't great, because it has a lot of potentials. But it's still worth checking out, especially if you're into retro games.

Pros:

  • Great art direction
  • Good soundtrack

Cons:

  • Some technical issues
