Playing as a heavy metal legend battling in a fantasy world isn't something new. However, Metal Tales: Overkill is taking the concept into the roguelike genre, where that is an idea that hasn't graced our screens before. Naturally, we'd be curious to see how a game based on music would work against the typical mechanics of roguelike gameplay.
The upcoming title is self-classed as an action-adventure 3D roguelike guitar shooter. A genre name like that could instantly sell. Still, we try to have a little bit more of a solid opinion about gameplay rather than be blinded by the obscure! Let's preview Metal Tales: Overkill and see if the game will ultimately deliver something unique around the heavy metal video game ideas.
Guitar Gods and Monsters
Of course, anyone would be curious about the narrative and lore that supports this intriguing heavy metal universe. We'll go out and say that the storyline is hilariously brilliant. You'll be a guitar player tasked with fighting guitar gods, plaguing the world with heavy metal zombies hellbent on destroying new metal bands and their legions of dedicated fans.
If the storyline wasn't enough to pull you in, the gameplay might. Metal Tales: Overkill is a top-down 3D roguelike with cartoony visuals that support the wackiness of the game concept. Players will use an arsenal of guitars and advanced capabilities to battle hordes of zombie foes and face up to defeat each of the eight guitar gods. Yep, I'm ready!
While we haven't been treated to gameplay yet, the initial media released to showcase Metal Tales: Overkill looks fun. Battles involve crazy guitar work, an extensive inventory of guitars, and gameplay varies with procedurally generated levels. There seems to be a focus on showcasing the player skill and replayability factor rather than creating a narrative-based playthrough, but the entertainment factor remains high.
Metal Tales: Overkill is a game that looks silly, but you get the intended feeling. Casual players can rejoice in a lighthearted roguelike that's easy to learn yet hard to master and enjoy some guitar-shredding goodness with their friends on the co-op mode. And heavy metal fans will certainly anticipate a new video game based on the genre that brings the weird and wonderful culture into a playable format!
Next Level Metal
Metal Tales: Overkill looks like the good kind of ridiculous. It's doubtful that the game will have any meaningful narrative. Still, it will promote the idea of intense action based on heavy metal stereotypes. That notion alone makes gameplay seem like it will be fun. However, it won't have the colossal impact on the gaming scene like titles such as Brutal Legend had.
The game will be something you can pick up, play, giggle, and shelve. Or so it would seem, at least. We've seen all we can see about Metal Tales: Overkill, and there could yet be some surprises in store. All that's left to do is play is when we finally get a release date.
