Why the heck is a guy in his 30s reviewing Monster High Ghoul Spirit? Well, I wanted to get my niece a doll, but thought that the Barbie selection was so boring. As I love monsters, I thought that was something I could share with my niece and she got a real kick out of it. So when I heard that there was a video game based on this toy line and show I knew I had to check it out.
Welcome To Monster High
One thing that I feel may divide people’s opinions on the game is that in the story mode for Monster High Ghoul Spirit, you do not actually play as one of the main girls. Instead, you have to create your own character that is new to the school and is trying to fit into things. I am sure there will be some kids that will love the idea of being a new monster at the school, but there are probably also some kids that will wish they could play as their favorite character from the show.
Is This Wii Or Nintendo 64?
Look, the Nintendo Wii was not a graphical powerhouse, we all know that. However, I have to say that Monster High Ghoul Spirit is a very average-looking game. Sure, the characters that kids know and love here are decent-looking enough, but the game has a very muddy and jaggy kind of look to it and I must say there are parts of the game that could pass for a later Nintendo 64 game! While it does capture the Monster High look and feel, it does it in a very basic way.
The sound in the game is kind of weird. Most of the dialogue is done via text and I am fine with that. Yet there are some voice-overs in the game, but these appear to happen at just random and quite often they will say something that has nothing to do with the text on the screen.
Do It Your Way
The main game mode where you create your character and then explore the school is pretty damn impressive. Some people may tell you that Monster High Ghoul Spirit is just a silly game where you play mini-games and if you read a brief description of the game, you could be forgiven for thinking that. Yes, there are many types of mini-games that make up the overall game.
However, you have to explore the school and you are able to complete the various story chapters in a very non-linear way. There are many fetch quests in-between the mini-games and dialogue sections where you get to chat with other characters too. I was very impressed with this and it was far more than I thought they would do in a game like this. I 100 percent thought that this would be a simple party game just full of dumb mini-games. So, I was very impressed with what was on offer here.
Look, this is a game for kids and kids who are already fans of Monster High and that is fine. I have played many garbage kids games over the years, but I have to say, Monster High Ghoul Spirit is not one of them. This game may not look all that great, but it features a nice and big Monster High adventure for kids to go on.
